8 Great Roses For a BBQ

Rank Wine Rating Price
1 Artazuri Rosado Garnacha (2011)
Comments: This smells lean and a bit mean with mineral notes accenting barely ripe raspberry fruit, topped with a hint of green herb and some lemon pith. On the palate it shows lovely ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit, framed by solid acidity and a nice bit of fizz from some trapped CO2. There are really lovely spice nuances here as well as some floral and herbal top notes that add compelling complexity. Fine-grained tannins grab a hold of the palate alongside the CO2 and yield a long, slightly savory and accented finish. 88pts

2 Folie a Deux Ménage à Trois Merlot (2011)
Comments: The Gewurztraminer really pops on the nose here along with wonderfully fresh raspberry fruit and hints of flint, dried flowers and Swedish Fish. A touch sweet on entry, this shows fine balancing acidity in the mouth. The Gewurz adds nice honey and honeysuckle notes early on the palate, joined by flavors of sweet red berries and a hint of chocolate on the palate. The finish is more of the same with an orange rind/citrus character joining in. This is unusual and the floral quality contributed by the Gewurztraminer will prove to be divisive, but this is awfully well made in its style and will knock some folks’ socks off. 88pts

3 Marques de Riscal Rioja Rose (2011)
Comments: This offers up a rather unique array of aromas including tobacco, jammy red fruits, lots of strawberry, and a floral background note. Round and soft, this is easy drinking in style with a soft, creamy edge to the strawberry fruit. Shows suggestions of tobacco, strawberry leaf and pollen on the palate. The finish shows a hint of austere tannin helping to ground the wine. Nice persistence to the earthy, almost sandy-toned raspberry fruit. 87pts

4 Parallèle 45 Ac Rosé (2011)
Comments: Powdery smelling with notes of talc accenting the leafy apple peel and light red berry fruit of the nose. Bright and fresh on entry, this is fruity in a lovely way, delivering fresh raspberry and cherry flavors sprinkled with a little lime to the palate. The texture is just a touch supple, just a touch grippy. Very middle of the road but satisfying, with a fruity wild strawberry finish that shows good fruit persistence and a bit of RS. Nice and sure to be a crowd-pleaser. 87pts

5 Santi l'Infinito Chiaretto di Bardolino Assico DOC Rose Veneto (2011)
Comments: A tight little nose with notes of cherry blossoms, a touch of mineral water and some zingy raspberry nuances. In the mouth this is fairly fruit with plenty of refreshing acidity. It probably has a touch of RS supporting the vivid, orange-laced strawberry fruit, but all this acidity keeps the wine fresh and balanced. Cherries pop on the finish with a hint of herbal stem and some lime gummy bear fruitiness. A touch too fruity for some, but this is a zesty, fun loving rosé. 87pts

6 Goats Do Roam Wine Company Rosé Blend Goats Do Roam Rosé (2011)
Comments: This smells spicy and citrussy with a small wild berry kind of fruit and some salty, mineral aromas. Lean and fresh, this delivers a lovely raspberry juice tone on the palate with soft suggestions of tree bark and dried spices adding definition. Really fresh and juicy. Though this does turn a bit lean on the finish, it still pumps out the raspberry and strawberry fruit. This may not be complex but it’s pure, fresh and has a really fine texture. This is a great rosé for a party! 87pts

7 Dominio del Plata Malbec Benmarco (2011)
Comments: Light milk chocolate and herb notes greet the nose here along with some plummy and dark berry fruits. Soft and lightly sweet, this is the answer to the question of what the best white Zinfandel is. There’s enough sugar here to be off putting to some, but those looking for a very fruity style of rosé will be thrilled by the bright, juicy acidity that balances the sugar and yields a wine bursting with black cherry, plum and lightly spicy flavors that linger on the finish. 86pts

8 Panky Rose Cinsault Grenache Syrah Santa Ynez Valley California Wine (2011)
Comments: Not terribly aromatic though this shows some earthiness, a bit of cherry candy sweetness and some herbal tones on the nose. Bright and lightweight on the palate with fairly simple red fruit flavors and a nice suggestion of watermelon, all backed up with a bit of white pepper and some herbal nuance. A bit simple, though easy drinking and refreshing with plenty of acidity. 85pts
