6 Top Rated Domestic Riesling

1 Dry Creek Heritage Vines Zinfandel (2011)
Comments: Very pretty and perfumed on the nose. All sorts of fresh and lightly dried fruit aromas like grapefruit and fig create attractive complexity. There’s also a nice floral top note here and some glassy, nuanced soil tones. This is rich and smooth in the mouth. Plenty of acidity adds its limy mark, but the slightly obviously sweet apple and pineapple fruit absorbs the acidity nicely, allowing it to add a nice mineral fishtail on the back end. The finish is a touch dull with the sugar taking the upper hand most of the way, but that’s a minor detail in an otherwise winning package. 90pts

2 Lamoreaux Landing Riesling Seneca Lake Ice Wine (2010)
Comments: Mineral and dried orange peel greet the nose with a hint of dried apricot backing things up. Fairly dry in the mouth, this shows some lovely richness. The bright acidity remains rather well planted in the apricot, orange marmalade and faintly red berry-topped fruit of the mid-palate. The finish turns back to the mineral side, with pretty good length and lovely insinuations of red fruit and grapefruit pith. This is very complete with a fine texture, good balance and attractive flavors. 90pts

3 Tierce Finger Lakes Dry Riesling (2009)
Comments: Dry and a bit waxy on the nose with hints of tree bark and a nuttiness topping the lightly spicy fruit base notes. This is lean yet not mean in the mouth, with a nice richness covering enough acidity to lend brightness and add a squeeze of lemony fun to the base of dried pineapple and apricot fruit. Some complexity emerges on the back end and adds to the finish, which shows a lovely layering of fruit, mineral and gentle spice notes. This is rather elegant with just enough sugar to polish off the most aggressive edges. 90pts

4 Troon Vineyard Riesling Applegate Valley Dry (2010)
Comments: Funky on the nose with all sorts of weird aromas that range from dried flowers to licorice. Chewing tobacco, dried blood orange and apple butter with a little old wool blanket thrown in for good measure. Light and bright on entry with a lovely rhubarb note early on that leads to a mid-palate full of subtle and elegant orchard fruit flavors. This is rather soft in a way. Though the acid is fairly electric on the mid-palate, there’s not a lot of weight here but plenty of flavor and refreshment. The finish is zippy and clean and really quite long and dynamic. This smells a bit but feels so honest and fresh in the mouth that I really like it. 88pts

5 Eroica " Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen C.v (2010)
Comments: Rather white peachy on the nose with underlying notes of fresh apple sauce and sweet sage leaf. Moderately sweet on entry with a lot of acidity making this vibrant and zesty on the palate. The fruit has a slightly tropical, exotic edge to it, showing off papaya and guava notes with a touch of ruby red grapefruit underneath. The grapefruit and some lime pith and mineral notes take over on the long finish that ends with a touch of mouth-cleansing astringency. This really is quite attractive, it just lacks a bit of life in the mouth. 88pts

6 Lamoreaux Landing Round Rock Vineyard Riesling (2010)
Comments: Rather earthy smelling with spicy top note over a bed of red fruits and forest spice. A touch viscous up front and showing slightly more than a hint of sweetness. This also packs in some serious acidity making the wine lively and interesting with fresh, sweet apple fruit topped with melon and pomelo flavors that fade into a lemony, slightly pithy and slightly sandy finish of moderate length. 88pts
