11 La Rioja Alta Tempranillo Rioja Gran Reserva 904 (2001)
Comments: Just a classic Gran Reserva on the nose with dill and vanilla from American oak layered under raspberry fruit with all sorts of dried thyme, barn floor, dried grass and earthy leathery nuances adding complexity. At first this is quite lean in the mouth, built an vibrant acids and modest if firm tannins, with air this gains weight on the palate and inklings of dark berry fruit start framing the core of tart red fruit. The backend begins to turn silky and gains the weight that adds some plushness to the finish. This is remarkable today for it’s perfume but still needs some time in bottle or decanter to show it’s best. 93pts

12 Schramsberg J. Schram Napa Valley (2005)
Comments: Intensely aromatic with lovely notes of green nuts, honeycomb, wild flowers, fennel pollen, green anise seed, brie rind and jammy green plum with a hint of gooseberry. Large scaled with a super fine mousse, this is creamy and broad with complex leesy flavors of smoke, nuts, caramel and even a hint of vanilla under rich citrus, quince, green plum, apricot and raw almond flavors. The finish is tense, if a little subtle, and fairly long. Refined and complex, this deserves to be served with dinner. 94pts

13 Zaca Mesa Black Bear Block Syrah (2009)
Comments: Funky and rich on the nose, gamier and more savory than the Mesa Reserva Syrah with a nice black olive aspect and fine briar and smoky overlay. In the mouth this shows impeccable balance, super clarity, and excellent ripeness of fruit. Earthy, gamy and deep with a soft truffle and black pepper overlay to the black cherry and wild raspberry fruit, the tannins here are fine grained and tightly packed adding some volume to the elegant mouthfeel and leading to a clear if very slightly earthy, bitter chocolate and thyme laced finish which is long and clear. This has a great sense of ripeness without a hint of over ripeness. 94pts

Comments: This has a stunning nose, high-toned and floral, with spicy, lightly smoky accents to the earthy small berried fruits that offer up a nuanced beet root note. Soft yet structured, there is lovely depth here with a rich front edge followed by nice nuanced spice notes and very pure, defined red berry and black cherry skin fruit that shows off nearly perfect integration. This remains very perfumed on the back end, with a little savory olive wood note on the long finish that features a nice hint of cherry pie. This is flamboyantly wide open and absolutely gorgeous. 94 points

16 Barbera Cascina Francia Giacomo Conterno (2011)
Comments: High toned on the nose with aromas of blue mineral earth, dusty, blue flowers, and wild berry fruit that shows a bit more red fruit character than the Cerretta. This shows great focus and definition in the mouth with great old vine character, elegant yet really snappy and well focused. There’s an amazing purity and rawness to this, it’s fresh and shows not a hint of alcohol with incredible purity to the fruit that widens out on the back end with black spices, a nice earthy, mineral component and fleshy, ripe plummy fruit supported by gentle tannins. With ait this does develop a leathery note on the nose which might be off-putting to some, but I just kept on drinking this. Awesome Barbera. 95pts

17 Francesco Rinaldi Figli & Barolo Cannubbio (2009)
Comments: Immediate dirty barrel on the nose, this also takes air to clean up, and when it does there’s great tobacco, rosebud, dried herb, and baked soil aromas here. On entry this is cool, crisp, and open with fine ripe tannins, great focus and good complexity on the palate. There are lovely flavors of wild raspberries layered with savory, umami notes of tobacco and lardo. Somewhat cool and compact on the palate at this point, this is pretty classic Cannubi expression with a gorgeous mouthfeel and a long ripe if slightly drying tannic finish. This has really fine energy in the mouth on the backend and through the finish. 93pts

Comments: Wow this has a gorgeous nose, sweet and lightly fudgy, tarry and full of dark oily spice notes wrapped in a touch of animal and toastiness. In the mouth this is powerful, a touch dense but not weighty, and chewy with tannin and excellent freshness of dark cherry fruit flecked with mineral and balsamic accent notes. The balance is terrific here and this shows an added level of refinement with tons of ripe tannins on the finish which shows off very ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit. A powerhouse to be sure, this should turn out to be stunning. 94pts

19 Quinta Do Crasto Douro Red Reserva Old Vines (2010)
Comments: Aged in very light toast wood,100% new French, A bit spicy on the nose with a fair base of new French oak showing some toastiness in a nutty coffee bean kind of way along with , a bit of something herbal and smoky adding a bit of a wild note to the bouquet. Rich and smooth on entry with excellent supporting acidity, there's some marzipan here early on the palate with dry, slightly earthy dark berry fruits and some vague umami notes on the backend. This is powerful in the mouth with stony minerality, almost a bit rusty even, but today it is quite structured so even though one can sense the savory and deep fruit and lovely structural integration, it remains a bit matte and opaque on the palate no doubt destined to improve in the cellar. 93pts

20 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain (2007)
Comments: A bit tanky on the nose still, this is tight and nuanced with very fine if slightly nutty oak-driven today. Air brings out a hint of grassiness, then a little blue fruit that shows fine ripeness with an edge of sweetness, dried herb notes that really build on the nose and a hint of roast coffee bean. Wow, this is stunningly well-balanced and packed with dark and powerful fruit that shows lighter shadings of strawberry and raspberry accenting the core of black fruit with lovely nuanced wood spice following on the back end. The finish reveals layers of dusty tannins covered with black cherry fruit, which just builds in intensity and length. This is powerful and seamless. 96 points
