2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

5. Montirius Vacqueyras Garrigues (2010)

This shows big olive, beef jerky beef jus and hoisin aromas on the nose over a base of jammy blackberry and sweet cherry fruit, accented with a hint of vanilla. Matte and extracted on entry, there’s a lot of dark fruit and black pepper here in a muscular, focused style. This seems a touch closed today, though there is plenty of black fruit and medicinal notes to keep things interesting right through a powerful, clean finish that shows a hint of cinnamon. 88pts

  • 541617CarlJBonura Domaine Durieu make a beautiful Chateauneuf du Pape that fills the mouth and is excellently priced at list of $40 but which can be found for under $30. I think it is an excellent buy.

  • 253137hugh27 I could not disagree more- the wines chosen with the exception of Beaucastel are always poorer performers to some of the lesser lights- just because they have the name does not mean they have the quality- For Vacqueyras there is non better than Domaine de Monardiere and Gigondas Les Goubert- but for Chateauneuf the top available stars are Clos deu Caillou, Grand Tinel, & Bosquet des Papes, sadly the best but almost impossible to find -Domaine de Marcooux- 100 points, Roger Sabon, 99 pts and Laurent Charvin, 99 pts. also give a look at Olivier Hillaire

  • 1098305Tom Wandeloski I was able to taste and review the 2009 vintage recently. It was very good. Fruit notes of plum and fig with a hint of cocoa and tobacco. It has a long finish on the palette with mid-acidity. This wine has not peaked and will mature nicely over time (2019-2024).
