Only one wine in this year's collection is labeled 2005 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spatlese (there is no auction cuvée), and it combines fruit from later pickings with several early selections of partially shrivelled berries that greatly enhanced the wine's must weight and acidity. A pungent nose of spiced apple, cherry, and white raisin leads into a palate whose creaminess adds allure, while not at all detracting from this Riesling's fundamental delicacy and duty to refresh. Pungent suggestions of apple peel, citrus rind, and slate add counterpoint to a rich yet refined finish of ravishing persistence. I would not hesitate to sock away for up to 25 years one of the roughly 670 cases made of this wine.
Light straw color with slight yellow and green. Lovely nose reminds us of well made Chablis with its scents of flint, cool slate, liquefied rocks, flowers, and smoke. Attractive in the mouth as well with nice spicy green apple flavors, lemon zest, and tangy acidity. Starts sweet, creamy, and fruity but finishes with tartness. Clean and light on its feet, this spatlese has exemplary balance. Long, consistent finish. This was a first rate wine.
The Saar had a very successful vintage in 2005, as is evidenced by this succulent and stylish Spatlese. Citrusy and sleek, with a racy core of rich, ripe fruit, it feels perfectly balanced, driven by the steely acidity typical of the region.
The Saarburger village wines exhibit an interesting, subtle "dusty" terroir character when young and they are superbly balanced. They have great aging potential and are a classic complement to seafoods - give it a try with trout or ceviche.
