Sori Tildin 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Color: Deep purple. Aroma: Complex aromas of toast, minerals, sour cherries, cedar and spices. Taste: Displays the roundest tasting profile of all Gaja single-vineyard wines. The rich body, subtle texture and fine, ripe tannins are typical for this wine of great finesse, the quintessential expression of the land and the Nebbiolo grape. This wine has extraordinary aging potential--more than forty years in outstanding vintages. Aging: 12 months in barrels followed by 12 months in large oak casks

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Fascinating aromas - raspberries and blackberries pouring forth on the nose with a hint of spices and tobacco. Full bodied with feminine silky, round tannins, an encapsulating finish of exceptional length. One of the best Barbarescos I've ever tried. Give it another 5 years.

Tight, unremarkable. No detailed notes, but if you own it . . . put it down for a few years and hope for the best. Given the source good things will likely happen.

11/02/07 - extremely costly if purchased today - our wine group purchased years ago - however, opened to soon - decantered - and sat for 90 minutes before tasting never brought out the flavors of the wine - however, we can say we tasted the wine - h/b

Displaying plenty of cherry, raspberry and floral notes, this is well-structured and balanced, with hints of sweet spices gracing the finish. Very expressive now, showing the potential to age. Juicy and long. Best from 2016 through 2029.

Gaia Gaja uses the word “salty” to describe this next wine, and I see her point. The 2010 Sori Tildin shows a dry, firmly structured quality that enhances those extraordinary, breezy overtones of lead pencil and brimstone that so fittingly frame the Nebbiolo grape. The lingering end-notes of rose petal, ginger and cedar are striking. You immediately feel the tannic structure and power of the wine. The jump is very sharp next to the Costa Russi, and that’s why this is one of Gaja’s best cellar-agers. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2040.

Auge: intensives Kirschrot; Nase: in der Nase kräftig, reich an reifer Fruchtigkeit, aber mit frischen Nuancen (Schwarze Johannisbeeren, Brombeeren) feine, kremige Eichennoten; Gaumen: im Gaumen fleischig, kräftig, geschmackvoll, mineralische Noten
