Simi Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This brilliantly clear, light straw-colored wine smells of pineapple, passion fruit, guava and grapefruit, with a hint of minerality. The palate offers generous nectarine and grapefruit with some flinty notes and a clean, refreshing finish. Simi Sauvignon Blanc pairs wonderfully well with gazpacho, raw oysters, and beet, orange and goat cheese salad.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. A more subtle style of Sauvignon Blanc that is both light and refreshing. Pear, apple and a hint of spice set off with medium acidity and good balance. A very nice mid week drinker.

Decent sauvignon blanc, especially for the price. Nice citrus flavors, green apple but not the over the top grapefruit. Decent balance and nice acidity. Good summer time deck wine.

Quite pale color. Herbal, grassy nose. Fortunately, that herbalness and grassiness is very much diminished in the mouth. Very pleasant lime tartness on the palate--not quite as tart as most NZ SBs, but significant presence. Back label indicates grapes are sourced from Alexander, Knight's and Russian River Valleys. US$9.99 at Total Wine last Feb.

Sharp green apple and fennel; good acidity. Excellent example of what I love about Sonoma Sauv Blancs and at a great value.

Steve Reeder blends this Sauvignon with five percent Semillon, adding a hint of wheat-like savor to the fruit. It's fresh and bright, packed with lime,m lemongrass and peach flavors that show off its blend of warm- and cool-climate fruit. A versatile, mouthwatering white to serve with white sausages, whether seafood, chicken or veal.

Well-structured wine of elegance and richness; complex with a delicate citrus start followed by spice, ending with a silky acidic finish.

A classic white wine, crisp, dry, pale and brilliant. Made with fruit from their favorite Sonoma County vineyards, and blended with just 9% Segrave;millon for a round, spicy note in the mouth and finish. Only 14% of the wine was barrel fermented this time, to preserve the purity of the rich fruit flavors. All the wine was aged in older French oak and stirred on its lees to promote the silky texture that feels so good in your mouth. Taste the layers of citrus, melon and pear, and outstanding fruit and acid balance.

Intense and lively, with bright, tart lemon, grass and subtle vanilla flavors that keep their focus through the finish.

A richer, more complex style, with delicate layers of citrus and pear accented with subtle grassy notes. The creamy mouthfeel is balanced by an elegant, crisp finish.
