Large juicy blackberries with some nice spice and black pepper. Huge and spicy wine with a bit of tar and an eternal finish of licorice.

James P. Rowe, Sr., is passionate about his Italian heritage. His love of agriculture is rooted in the time spent as a child at his grandfather's Central Valley ranches, while his family ties are expressed in the name he and his late wife Jane gave their vineyard: Pezzi King combines the names of Jim's and Jane's mothers, respectively. The Rowes established Pezzi King Vineyards in 1993, when Jim discovered a beautiful vineyard nestled in the hills of Dry Creek Valley during a weekend visit from San Francisco. Aware of the vineyard's superior terroir and captivated by the site's natural beauty, he purchased the 137-acre estate and undertook its beautiful transformation into one of the leading producers of Zinfandel in the acclaimed Dry Creek Valley appellation. The first step was restoring the vineyard to its natural, unspoiled potential: Jim Rowe, Sr. immediately eliminated all use of chemicals and implemented all-natural farming techniques. His commitment to quality extended to the winery, as well, which they completely renovated with state-of-the-art equipment. Today, Jim Rowe, Sr. and his wife, Cynthia, run the winery as a collaborative enterprise. Cynthia Rowe is involved with business planning and strategy for Pezzi King Vineyards. Jim Rowe, Sr. states his mission for Pezzi King Vineyards directly: "I wanted wines that would be considered among the best in the world. To accomplish this, I had to start with an excellent piece of land and add the right mix of talent and hard work. We're doing that at Pezzi King and we'll continue to strive for and achieve excellence in everything we do." Since 2006, Pezzi King Vineyards has won 17 Gold and 22 Silver medals in wine competitions and is among the highest rated Zinfandels in the world. Closed nose, with just a hint of raspberry. The mouth is peppery and spicy, with pear fruit. The body is strong and alcoholic, and the finish is a bit metallic, which I didn't like.

an inky liquor on the nose combined with blackberries and purple plums. jammy on the palate with spice intermixed, dark chocolate, full, hearty and hot - 16.1% alcohol level.

Christmas spice on the nose. Huge flavor with lots of cinnamon. Big grippy tannins with a meandering finish. Really nice wine.

Beautiful nose of cherries, earth and blackcurrants. Mineral, acidic layer upfront with layers of eucalyptus and menthol. Grows progressively deeper on the mid-palate with coffee and treacle flavors dominating on the finish.

Rich earth and dark red fruit on the nose; ripe, with candied notes throughout.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Still somewhat on the tight side in its keenly focused aromas of blackberries, light spices and glimpses of oak, this full-bodied wine avoids a drift into excess despite its 16.1% stated alcohol. The keys here are fruit that stays the course from front to back and well-integrated acidity that lends a pert edge to the proceedings. It is not a wine for the faint of heart, but so too is it not a blunderbuss. Fans of the style will find it priceworthy.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. A smaller yet more obvious wine, this one has more "modest" 15.4% alcohol, and its tilt toward chocolate comes at the cost of lowered fruitiness relative to its mate above. It starts out as a tad more open but then shows a trace of tart acidity in the latter palate and finish.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

The 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel has concentrated dark fruit aromas of jammy black cherry and cassis along with spicy notes of white pepper and truffle laced with vanilla. This full figured wine is big, ripe and expressive. Soft tannins, warm notes o... Wine Enthusiast. A Zinfandel wine from California in USA. 2007 Pezzi King Winery Zinfandel Old Vines 750ml
