The enormously endowed, ostentatious, yet captivating 2002 Shiraz 9 is a sexy effort. There are 1,500 cases of this blockbuster. Its inky plum/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, smoked meats, and toasty American oak (from aging in 100% new American barrels). Opulent, viscous, and thick, this succulent Shiraz is meant to offer immediate appeal. It should last for 7-8 years, becoming more civilized and measured with additional age.
U.S. importer Dan Phillips and Australian winemakers Sparky and Sarah Marquis are turning heads with their new label, whose roster includes some lower-priced wines and this blockbuster Shiraz. It's so big and heady it's almost a caricature of Aussie Shiraz, but ultimately stays in bounds. Ripe and dense, it has a distinctive note reminiscent of exotic spices, mingling with rich blackberry jam flavors, which resonate on the smoky finish. Drink now through 2008.

It possesses great flavor intensity, marvelous purity, and superb definition for such a sexy, opulent, blockbuster Shiraz fruit bomb. There is plenty of tannin under the wealth of glycerin and fruit, but this is a wine to enjoy now and over the next 12-15 years.

The 2006 Shiraz 9 was tasted from a barrel sample. It has been barrel-fermented in new French and American oak barriques and hogsheads where it has been aging for 14 months (with another 2 months to go prior to bottling). It delivers an alluring bouquet of pain grille, smoke, mocha, espresso, and blue fruits. This is followed by a full-bodied, personality-filled Shiraz with blueberry, blackberry liqueur, licorice, and a hint of chocolate emerging on the palate. Opulent, sweet, and lengthy, it will evolve for several years but can be enjoyed now and over the next 12-15 years.
Deep ruby. Explosive aromas of dark cherry preserves, plum, blackberry, smoked meat, expresso and baking spices. Dense and sweet, with vibrant, powerful dark berry flavors and a creamy, lush texture. Finishes with very persistent, sweet boysenberry, and spice notes of cinnamon and mace. A serious but seductive and suave shiraz that's drinking well right now.
