Louis Latour Pouilly-Fuisse 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Pouilly-Fuisse is the name of a village in the Maconnais producing highly distinctive Chardonnay wine. The vineyards producing this wine are part of a breath-taking landscape where the limestone and heavy clay soils combine to create a unique terroir. The wine shows a green-gold color, and delicate aromas on the nose that are disarmingly seductive. On the palate there is a round and full herbal fruitiness that complements the crisp acidity leading to a satisfying finish.

The Latours have been vintners in Burgundy since the 17th century, slowly building a unique Domaine of 125 acres. Maison Louis Latour currently has the largest Grand Cru property in all of the Cote d’Or with a total of 71.58 acres. The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All of the grapes from the vineyards we own are vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A unique rail-way system with elevators allows the entire wine-making process to be achieved by the use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985, Louis Latour has been selling the wines from its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour. The Latour family founded the ‘Maison de négoce’, an important shipping company, in 1797, and it is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune to this day. The company is unique in Burgundy in that it is still family-owned and family-run, having been passed down from father to son for over ten generations. To celebrate our Bicentenary in 1797, we published a commemorative book and were admitted into the exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only accepts companies that are leaders in their respective fields, remain family owned, have a history of 200 years’ experience and still bear the name of their founder. There are only approximately 30 of these companies in the world. Maison Louis Latour ships its wines to over 60 countries worldwide. These world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs can be found on the most famous dining tables around the globe. Read less

Chalk and mineral on the nose with a touch of estery banana peel and a bit of leesiness. The fruit here is bright and clean and firmly in the spicy apple and lime and of the register. In the mouth this is focused and sleek with a richness of flavor but not the weight of many wines. The acids are bright, if modest yet balanced and the midpalate is clean and refreshing with wonderfully bright, floral and vanilla accented apple tones. There’s a streak of vanilla that runs through this but it’s really well integrated and a simple accent note to the fruit flavors. 87pts

Bright aromas with a fungal funkiness and some baked pears mashed in. Medium thick mouthfeel, with medium acidity, light fruit and more than a touch of oak. The finish kind of drops off, lingering mostly with the oak flavors.

A very nice old world chardonnay. The color in the glass is a rich golden yellow with hints of green on the edge. Nose is a simple and subtle apple/pear and hay with hints of mineral. Smooth clean mouth feel hitting all ares of the palate with apple, lime zest and melon with a slightly oaky finish. Acid notes are bright but balanced. Pairs very well with dill trout and other lighter seafood dishes.

The colour is a sparkling pale gold. The nose is seduced by its aromas of white fruits, notably peach, to which Chlorophyll notes add themselves. In the mouth the Pouilly-Fuisse 2007 is frank, muscular and powerful. The white fruit aromas are rounded out by a certain minerality. With a beautiful length in the mouth, this wine will be tasting beautifully over the next 3 years.Tasted in February 2009
