Kaesler Shiraz Barossa Valley Stonehorse 2004
A very good wine, with mixed plums and caramel on the palate. Contains 4% Viognier, which may well account for the floral quality that also shows in the mouth. Has a hearty helping of oak on the finish.Add winemaker's notes
Kaesler is a privately owned wine company that produces estate grown wines from vineyards as old as 1893. The Kaesler family were pioneers who settled in the Barossa Valley in the 1840’s. In 1891 they bought a parcel of land and in 1893 planted their first vines. Today Kaesler wines are made from these ancient, dry grown vineyards, by the third owners of this magnificent property.

A fruit-driven, exotic, in-your-face cuvee, the 2003 Shiraz Stonehorse (which spends time in old oak) does not possess the structure found in the Old Vine The Hammer. It offers lovely black cherry and blackberry fruit as well as medium to full body, but not as much espresso roast, vanilla, or tannin as the 2002 Old Vine. This richly fruity offering sells for a song. It should drink well for a decade or more. It is a great introduction to the more seriously structured, denser Kaesler style.
Polished on the outside, vibrant on the inside, with a whoosh of cherry, plum and licorice flavor that just won't quit as the finish persists impressively. Drink now through 2012.
Broad, fresh and open, a lively mouthful of currant, blackberry and dusky spice flavors, picking up peppery notes as the flavors persist against very fine tannins. Best from 2008 through 2012.
Dense and chewy, concentrating its raspberry and red cherry flavors with vanilla and licorice notes, echoing on the fine-grained finish. Drink now through 2008.
The 2001 Shiraz Stonehorse (400 cases were exported to the USA) is produced from a parcel of vines planted in 1962, aged in old American oak casks, and bottled unfiltered. It is an opaque blue/purple-colored effort with a honeyed perfume of blackberry liqueur intermixed with smoke, earth, truffles, and licorice. Dense and full-bodied with a sweet, expansive palate, and a long finish (40 seconds), this seamless beauty can be enjoyed over the next 10-12 years.
Deep ruby. Powerful raspberry and cassis on the nose, with exotic Asian spice and floral oil accents. Liqueur-like dark berry flavors are impressively poised on a silky, midweight frame, with gentle tannins building on the back. Takes a turn to bitter cherry on the long, juicy finish, with the sexy spice notes repeating.
