Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 season, with long warm summer days and cool nights, produced fruit with ideal ripeness and sugar balance. Vineyard sites are selected for their high diurnal temperature range, resulting in wines with high natural acidity and low pH. All fruit was hand harvested. This super Pinot has a nose of dark cherries, cranberry juice, fresh raspberries, nutmeg, cinnamon, truffles, with underlying meaty, wet earth and mushroom characters. The palate is juicy, succulent fresh berries with a slippery, rich and slightly tart finish. Pair this with char grilled quail and rosemary, Peking duck pancakes or prosciutto.

An experienced vigneron counting over 20 years in the Australian wine industry, Phil Sexton relocated from the warm, coastal region of Margaret River to the gravelly slopes of Victoria’s Yarra Valley in the late 1990s to pursue cool climate viticulture. Beyond the pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir he was able to produce in the Valley, Phil discovered a number of vineyards in far flung corners of Victoria that inspired him to explore regional diversity in this small state. Thus the Innocent Bystander label was created, and his talented winemaking team tasked with delivering a range of wines with a personality all their own: distinctly regional, varietally expressive and definitely not your run of the mill blends. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

A little acidic and tastes a bit underripe. Could use some age on it. There's an herbal note that might turn out OK in a couple of years. I wouldn't not finish the glass if poured for me though...

Tasting Notes - Blueberries, boysenberries and pomegranate. Dark cocoa powder, tarry, earthy and slightly stalky just a hint of Campari. Plush and silky settling into a firm long palate.
