E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review:
Chiara captures the expression of this sun-drenched sandy-marne site perfectly: molten tannins amid a deep sea of dark plum, choc and even blueberry notes.

It's so finely woven, so pulpy and tasty, yet with an undercarriage to take it forward. Modern yes, rotos and barrique, but beautifully pure too; in fact you may come across some harmless anthocynanins/grape sediment as the wines are not fined or filtered.
(David Berry Green, BBR Buyer)

Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo). A bit candied, a bit cola, sort of flat and indistinct, fruity in a dry way, nice mid-palate feel. Nice, wiry, almost herbal red strawberry fruit on mid-palate, a bit simple but refreshing. (84-85pts)

Sweet, powerful, dried cherry fruit, very aromatic, chalk, a bit of Fruit Roll-Up, deep pure rich fruit. Powerful but not weighty, good acids, nice crisp tannins, nice fresh spice in the mouth, nice mineral cut. Very pure, very soil-driven, lively on the palate with good follow-through, lovely crisp tannins, a bit short. (92-94pts)
