Dr. Loosen Riesling Kabinett Mosel Blue Slate 2009

External Review by NapaCabs.com:

Kabinett is the lightest and most delicate style of Riesling in Germany. It is produced from the earliest picking in the best vineyard sites. Dr. Loosen Rieslings from these villages are some of the most elegant white wines in the world, with fine density and subtle power.

The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less

As with all of the Dr. Loosen wines, this blended kabinett is very fruit-forward and direct. The green apple and lime notes are wonderfully pure and balanced. Drink this light, spritely wine over the next few years.

Loosen's dry, generic estate-bottled 2005 Riesling "Blau Schiefer" smells of peach and Bernkasteler-signature black cherry, and offers sappy, bright fruit intensity and appropriate wet stone blue slate character on its dense mid-palate, along with an invigorating finish featuring clear, pure pit fruit, and cherry suggestions underlain by slate.

WE 90pts. - Winemaker Notes - Kabinett is the lightest and most delicate style of Riesling in Germany. It is produced from the earliest picking in the best vineyard sites. This estate grown Dr. Loosen Riesling Kabinett embodies the racy, mineral-driven style of steep, blue slate vineyards in the famous middle Mosel villages of Bernkastel, Graach and Wehlen. Dr. Loosen Rieslings from these villages are some of the most elegant white wines in the world, with fine density and subtle power.

Clean and refreshing, this offers richly sleek notes of Meyer lemon, papaya and exotic citrus underlined by fine acidity and lively notes of slate.

A white with great cut offsetting its richness, providing the poles for the lime, apple and white peach flavors. There's a touch of slate on the finish. Drink now through 2022.
