Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Brunello must be produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes and a minimum of 12.5% alcohol by volume is required. Total acidity cannot be lower than five parts per thousand. At Poggio Antico the alcohol content, total acidity, and dry extract always reach optimum levels, thanks to low yields and the favorable geographical position of its vineyards. Poggio Antico's Brunello di Montalcino is typically deep and intense ruby red in color. The bouquet is well developed and persistent, and increases in intensity with further bottle aging. It has a very clean nose, with hints of blackberry and licorice. In the mouth it is rounded and concentrated, with great vitality, yet elegant and harmonious, thanks to the particularly sweet tannins. It has a very long finish and ages gracefully under proper conditions. Poggio Antico also produces a limited number of Magnums (1,500 ml) of Brunello di Montalcino. In exceptional vintages, Double Magnums (3,000 ml) are also released. Both these special formats are packaged in beautiful wooden cases, which are also available - upon request - for the regular bottle format (750 ml.).

Tasted this at the Winery in June 2009. Not quite as good as the Reserva of the same vintage in my judgement, but exceptional regardless. While the tannins are handled well, I expect improvement on the remaining bottles I have with some time in the cellar

A wonderful inviting wine, deep red, with a delicious leathery bouquet - you just want to drink it the moment you see it. Appearance: long legs, excellent retention to the glass. Taste: very smooth and velvety, thick texture, a real full bodied wine. Long aftertaste. A pleasure to drink, and difficult to stop.

Full bodied and rich, brick red colour with a lot of tannines left as of March 2011. Would leave it in the cellar for another 3-5 yard, then serve it on a dark and rainy October evening with deer or elch and root vegetables :-)

Although the outstanding 1990 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino is ripe and dense, with medium to full body, it is not nearly as sexy and opulent as this estate's 1985. It exhibits plenty of density, but it seems less impressive than I would have thought given previous efforts from this winery. A weedy, tobacco component adds to the wine's complexity. This is not the most backward 1990 Brunello, but it does require 2-4 years of cellaring. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

Delicious from start to finish; quite powerful. It's very ripe and very sweet-tasting and melts in the mouth, showing tons of plum, red berry and chocolate flavors. Give it until 1997 to come together.

This winery seems to have the magic touch when it comes to obtaining graceful complexity balanced with rich, ripe fruit in their wines. The anise, tar and tobacco aromas mingle with smoke and an elegant, reserved Damson plum/black cherry core. So well-crafted you could enjoy this now - but what a promising future!

Aromas of black cherry and mineral, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with pretty fruit, soft tannins and a medium finish. Balanced for the vintage. Best after 2008.

Poggio Antico is one of the brightest stars in 2004 Brunello di Montalcino. Paola Gloder and her team deliver a gorgeous wine that reaches to the highest levels of aromatic richness and intensity. The wine is succulent, concentrated and elegant with amazing persistency. Only the slight sourness of its tannins prevented it from scoring higher. Age five more years.

Medium full body. Medium acid. Lots of fruit. Medium oak. Lots of tannin. Red fruits, tar, leather, cola. Tart, somewhat candied fruit dominates wood and spice. Complex, lingering.

Displays aromas of raspberries, flowers and minerals. Full-bodied, yet refined and racy, with hints of black pepper and blackberry character. Racy finish. Drink now.
