Bodega Norton Privada 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1885, the Buenos Aires to Mendoza railway opened, cementing the significance of this emerging wine-growing region high in the Andean foothills. Ten years later, Edmund Norton planted the first vines in Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo district. At 900-1100 metres, the altitude moderates the temperature, causing an extended ripening season, and also expose the vines to more ultraviolet light, which encourages the development of colour and tannin in the black-skinned varieties. The result is whites packed with vibrant flavour and good natural acidity, and well-structured, food-friendly reds. The Privada Malbec, Cabernet, Syrah blend has received a lot of very favourable attention and coverage from the world's wine writers - including a 92 point 'Smart Buys' rating from Wine Spectator and a Four Star 'Highly Recommended' appraisal from Decanter. The wine is made with the highly expensive care of a classed Bordeaux - including 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The resulting wine is concentrated with aromatic complexity. Notes of ripe fruit, spices and smoke and coffee characterise the nose. Whilst in the mouth the wine is unctuous and focused.

I really like this wine ... bright red fruit with some smokiness and coco. You can definitely taste the malbec but the merlot and cab round this wine out nicely.

Malbec, merlot and cab sauv. Nose of spice with hints on the palate of mouth-covering berry syrup, fig, mocha, fruitcake and has a long full finish. Drinking well now and they said through 2012. - Tasted at Marche` Bacchus 8/8/09
