I love Malbecs and with that said, I am extremely particular with this elevation loving grape of Argentinian fame (formerly of Bordeax). Benmarco is a purplish wine that has aromas consisting of black cherry, licorice and dark coffee. The flavors start with blueberry, chocolate and jam. This is a medium bodied wine that has a chewy jamminess that is balanced out with a lush acidity. This wine starts out with heavy flavors and ends light, a very nice wine that can you can drink today without cellaring - like most Malbecs.
Malbec and grilled foods......Malbec and pizza....Malbec is jammy or refined, depending on the winery. But Argentina, like Australia, produces so few poor vintages. BenMarco is a winery that produces the under $20 variety, and also produces Meritage varietals that run in the $60-$70 range. I've had both. I love both. The wine I'm reviewing tonight is $17.99 at Binny's if you live in the Chicago area. Under $20, no matter. I had it with my first ever pizza on the grill...what a lovely combination. I've had the 2007, the 2008 and now the 2009 BenMarco entry level Malbec, and none of them have let me down. Remarkably consistent. So, I would highly reccommend this wine while summer remains and you're out on the deck grilling foods or getting some take out from an Italian diner or Chinese diner. If the 2010 gets released before you read this, I wouldn't hesitate. This is a winner for the price no matter the vintage. This particular vintage contains 8% Bonarda, with 92% Malbec. I LOVE Malbec/Bonarda blends....so whatever the percentage blend, also a winner. Great summer red wine!

Quite ripe and forward, with lots of linzer torte, loganberry, melted licorice and plum cake flavors that glide along a sweet, round texture. Solid length. Very tasty. Drink now through 2010.
Comes out firing, with hints of thistle, leather and campfire accenting blueberry and blackberry aromas. The palate keeps that same mix of herbs and black fruit, while the feel is rich to the point of suggesting berry syrup. With mocha, molasses and coffee on the finish, this is a big Malbec for near-term drinking.
Good full medium ruby. Primary scents of black fruits, violet and licorice pastille. Sweet and lush on entry, then primary and fruity in the middle, with noteworthy concentration and little obvious oakiness showing. Finishes with compelling sweetness and a suggestion of bitter chocolate. A couple years in bottle should bring more complexity. Both this and the 2005 version include 10% bonarda.
At the suggested price, it is a steal. The 2007 Malbec contains 10% Bonarda. It received the same oak regimen as the Cabernet. Dark ruby/purple-colored, it exhibits a kinky perfume of black cherry, wild black raspberry, earth notes, and leather. On the palate there is plenty of jammy fruit, bright acidity, excellent balance, and a lengthy finish. While it may well evolve for 1-2 years, it can be enjoyed now. It too is a great value.
Good full ruby. Aromas of black fruits, licorice, menthol, dark chocolate and smoked meat. At once creamy and juicy, with very good sweetness and grip to the dark berry flavors. Finishes with suave tannins and very good persistence.
Blended with 10% Bonarda; spice box, incense, lavender, black cherry; rich, plush palate.
Lovely spice, mint and crushed raspberry fruit aromas give way to a supple, elegant version of Malbec, with perfumy raspberry and boysenberry fruit, and enticing spice and toast shadings on the finish. Very fresh acidity too. Contains 12 percent Bonarda. Drink now through 2006.
