Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva 2008

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Fresh, showing some maturing flavors of leather, macerated cherry and underbrush, with firm tannins for support. This tends toward the dry side. Drink now through 2018.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva is gorgeous, especially for a vintage that was not easy. Black cherries, mint, licorice and tobacco are supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins and lively acidity, both of which should allow the wine to age gracefully for a number of years. The 2008 could still use another year or two to soften, but it is gorgeous, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2018.

Saturated red. Spicy nuances of bay leaf, oregano, and clove complement dark cherry and underbrush aromas. Suave and fine-grained, with lovely inner-mouth energy, this refined Chianti is savory rather than sweet, with flavors of dark fruits and minerals dominating. The long finish shows broad tannins and a suggestion of menthol austerity.
