Yalumba Shiraz Blend Barossa 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is deep red in colour with sweet, fresh and fragrant aromatics of cherries, plums and bright red-currant fruits. Subtle spices and clove notes are present as are the floral hints of Viognier. This is a medium to full bodied wine with red fruit flavours, fine spices and cloves. It is a rich and softly textured Shiraz with the subtle sweet textures of Viognier.

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Six generations and more than 150 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over. Yalumba wines have a style all of their own and each have been influenced by a diverse range of elements. Elements Yalumba likes to call 'the controllables', such as the Yalumba Vine Nursery and on-site cooperage – as well as other factors that cannot be emulated by any other winery. Yalumba’s history and tradition combined with a reputation for innovation. I have tasted this wine over a couple of years in the hope that it would evolve and 'get better' - needless to say that my wait was in vain... too fat, some citrus notes, nectarine, lemon/lime... some orange peel and some honey well integrated but somewhat the flavours, aromas and the body of the wine do not go together... not my cup of tea!

Smooth and round, brimming with nutmeg-accented plum and berry flavors, lingering on the creamy-textured and -flavored finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2016. 1,500 cases imported. -HS (65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% shiraz Youthful purple. Primary dark berry and candied cherry aromas are complemented by licorice and cured tobacco, with a sexy vanilla quality gaining strength with air. Broad, sweet blackcurrant and cherry flavors offer good palate coverage and inviting sweetness and are nicely firmed by supple tannins. Shows a touch of heat on the persistent finish, which repeats the cherry and licorice notes. Id drink this now. ** SOLD OUT **

WS 91 Pts - The Scribbler 2008 is dense crimson purple in colour with a very appealing nose, displaying excellent concentration of dark fruits, spices, liquorice and dark olives. Fresh aromas of violets and lavender are present. The palate is silky and elegant, tasting of sweet blackcurrants and blueberries.

Aromas are of grass and tropical yellow fruit. Fresh pineapple and pear are the dominant flavors on the palate, and persist on through the finish. Medium-bodied, with nice weight; very good overall, particularly at this price.

Beguilingly lithe and fragrant, not as explosively aromatic as some Viognier, but rife with honeysuckle, pear and melon flavors that keep echoing appealingly on the dry, open finish. Drink now.
