Vineyard 29 Cabernet Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Member Review by Daniel Petroski:

Stunning wine from one of my favorite vintage years (2003) in California. Elegant on the nose, finesse in the mouth. Long, lasting finish. Full of luscious red and black fruit and hints of graphite and cedar. Lovely.

Chuck and Anne McMinn acquired the stewardship of Vineyard 29 in 2000 and began its evolution from a single vineyard to a full scale winery. In 1989, Teresa Norton and Tom Paine came to Napa Valley to retire - a dream that was quickly replaced by another when they learned their estate was prime cabernet sauvignon territory. In a matter of weeks, they were putting in a 3-acre vineyard under the watchful eye of lauded vineyard manager David Abreu and, within a year, planting cuttings from neighbors, Grace Family Vineyards. The first release in 1992 was warmly received by press and public alike. The turn of the century ushered in the next phase of Vineyard 29. Along with the Vineyard 29 property, Chuck and Anne acquired the historic Aida vineyard in 2000 as a perfect complement to the Vineyard 29 site for expansion of the winery’s portfolio. With a new, state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and the unquestionable skill of winemaker Philippe Melka, all the pieces were in place for Chuck and Anne to lead Vineyard 29 to a new and exciting level of winemaking. Today, we continue to pride ourselves on caring for fruit down to the single berry and believe in the crafting of memorable wines from the vineyard soil up. Read less

Deceptive advertising on this vendor. They say you can buy it at $15.00 but when you go to the web site it's over $100

There can be no question that this is a Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned and stylized by Napa Valley uber-winemaker consultant Philippe Melka. Yes, the fruit is forward – luscious and sweet from estate grapes that had been left out in the vineyard until they reached 26.7 Brix. But it must be said, that Melka, who came to the valley from France, has had enough experience now with the region and its terroir, that his wines, while once were decidedly showy – are now more in balance.Melka made this wine for Covad founder Chuck McMinn with restraint, in spite of the fact that he utilized all new French oak for 20 months; and he managed to bring the wine in a shade under the Maginot line of 15 percent. Here, it’s at a listed 14.8 percent, but the alcohol as well as the oak, are all of a piece. Perhaps that’s because the vines from which the wine was made, like Melka himself, are maturing as they reach the 16- to 19-year range. Additionally, the wine was neither fined, nor filtered – a good thing as it ages, as I think it will, for at least a dozen years. It’s approachable now – if you don’t mind drinking up what is a sizeable investment before you have a chance to make some equity. McMinn, who earned his money when he founded one of the first broadband providers, has produced only 550 cases of this wine.

The gorgeously proportioned flagship offering, the 2003 Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon (aged 18 months in French oak; 550 cases produced) boasts a beautiful Chateau Margaux-like perfume of flowers, creme de cassis, graphite, and subtle toasty oak.
