Villa Creek Red Rhone Blend Paso Robles Avenger 2009

Member Review by VegasOenophile:

Wonderful SMG blend with rich flavors. It's bold, rich and really tasty! Dense berry, loam, blackberry, wildberry and black cherry. Lots of smoke and earth and hints of bacon fat. Roasted cocoa. Full and lingers long. Really nice!

Per acre contracts insure that the fruit comes off the same blocks each vintage. The Cherry’s own 70 acre estate on the west side of Paso Robles boasts elevations of 1400-1800 feet, calcareous soils, south facing slopes and ample water. Grape growing conditions don’t get much better. The Cherry’s look forward to planting their first grape vines in 2010. Read less

2007 AVENGER 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache Elevage : 100% de-stemmed fruit from Booker Vineyard, basket pressed and racked once off gross lees. Aged 18 months in 50% new French Barriques. Color : Ron Burgundy Aromatics : An incredibly sexy offering with upfront notes of cocoa, blueberries, black licorice and violets. Palate : The mouth fills out with more chocolate, cherry cola and just a hint of black pepper and tar. The finish is both velvety and lush, keeping you coming back for more.

Spicy, grapey dark berry aromas fold over to the palate, offering hints of blackberry and wild berry. Full-bodied, supple, elegant and balanced, drinking very nicely already. 93 Points - Robert Parker Avenger is always built around Syrah some of which has been aged in Hungarian oak barrels imparting that Indian spice that complements the Syrah so well. This was the first vintage utilizing the amazing fruit off the young Booker vineyard. Lisa and Eric Jensen's meticulous farming have paid off. For being so young, the clusters had amazing uniformity and resulted in wine with rich, clean, pure Syrah fruit. This wine was handled in the traditional Villa Creek fashion of gently de-stemming to whole berries, native yeast fermentations, and daily punch downs. This wine was slowly and gently pressed near dry and placed into barrel where it remained for 18 months. Blend 60% Booker Syrah, 20% Booker and Denner Grenache, 20% James Berry Mourvedre Oak 50% new, equal parts French, Hungarian and American Appearance Rich, dark ruby red Nose Sweet smoke, juicy black fruits and Indian spice Palate Smoked meats, dark fruits and a deliciously lengthy finish filled with minerals and texture. Enjoy now and will evolve nicely in the cellar for 10 years.
