The 2009 Chardonnay Bee Block is just 20 feet from the Amphitheater Block, but here the exposure turns east. The Bee Block is the most overt of these 2009 Chardonnays from Varner. Here the fruit moves toward the tropical end of the spectrum, perhaps owing to a richer layer of topsoil. Nevertheless, this is the closest wine to what readers are likely to identify as California Chardonnay. Once again, the integration of French oak is nothing short of masterful. The long, textured, finish is striking. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

The prodigious 2008 Chardonnay Bee Block (Varner's most prolific cuvée at 596 cases) is one of the greatest Chardonnays I have tasted this year. Outstanding length and intensity, full-bodied power, and copious notes of buttery citrus, honeysuckle, spring flowers, white currants, lemon, tropical fruit blossoms, and spice are found in this brilliant example of this mountain appellation. Drink it over the next decade or more.

The youngest vines, the 21-year-olds, make up the 2006 Chardonnay Bee Block. This is also the largest production item at 500+ cases. Medium to full-bodied, with notes of waxy, caramelized nectarine, and oranges, in addition to lemon oil and crushed rock, this wine has beautiful texture and a full-bodied, long finish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

Robert Parker is a fan... He went to far as to call Varner's Chardonnays: my favorite Chardonnays from the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation. While the 2009 vintage remains unrated, the last eight vintages of Bee Block have received 91+ scores with the 2008 vintage receiving an impressive 97 point score. On the nose, aromas of Lemon Zest, honeysuckle and creme brulee. On the palate the wine is rich and full with bright acidity and a well defined intensity.
