Trefethen Family Vineyards Trefethen Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley Red 2005
Wine Tasting Notes Deep ruby in color, this complex Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits luxurious nose of blackberry, black cherry, plum, black currant, black pepper, cola nut, and chocolate with a hint of black pepper and olive. The tannins are ripe and velvety, leading to a richly textured palate. The wines fresh, rich raspberry jam, blackberry, currant, and chocolate flavors lead to a long persistent finish of cherry and toasted oak vanilla.

The 2005 Trefethen is wonderfully inviting in the glass, with typical claret color and excellent Cabernet bouquet of crushed roses infused with currant and wild red berries such as black mountain bilberry. The mouth feel is that of a well-made Cru Classé with ample acidity and palate-cleansing purity. The steely structure of the finish is in line with similarly styled French wines dominated by CS and is worthy of praise. This is much better than other recent vintages and highly recommended. May age for up to 5 more years.
a lovely, classic cab. is it a fruit bomb? who cares. so delicious!

Trefethen Estate winery is one of the few in Napa Valley that’s never bought any grapes. All of their wines are produced with grapes sourced from their estate vineyards, mostly the 61 vineyard blocks that make up their Main Ranch. The establishment of the Oak Knoll District AVA in 2004 is in large part due to Trefethen’s presence there. Just south of Yountville and Stag’s Leap, Oak Knoll is one of the coolest regions in the Valley. The Cabernet ripens slowly over an extended season developing complex flavors. Aged 16 months in French and American oak, this 2005 scored 97 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said “A monumental Cabernet that succeeds on every level. It’s deep, dark and ultrarich, showing massive blackberries, black currants, dark chocolate, violets minerals and a touch of sweet smoky oak. Beyond the flavors is the massive structure, with fabulously ripe, dense tannins and a bone-dry, long finish. Surely a tremendous wine capable of long-term aging. Try 2012-2018, at least.” Extremely limited.
