Tolosa Winery Pinot Noir Edna Valley Edna Ranch 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

When the fruit is in good condition as it was in 2009 no special magic needs to be preformed in the cellar. The standard techniques can be successfully employed. We harvest at night so the fruit is cold. It is destemmed into small open topped fermenters so punch downs can be used to extract color and flavor. After two weeks we drain the free run wine into barrels. In the late winter or early spring we make out blend. In 2009 this process was particularly challenging as finding the combination of lots that gave us the correct balance of flavors was elusive. In retrospect the time was well spent as the resulting wine is well poised and delicate.

Attractive plum color in the glass. Kinda musty odors. Pretty much a "standard" PN on my palate--medium bodied, most notable flavor is cherry, although there is some kind of a minerally or slate flavor--maybe that's what people mean by pencil lead. US$28.30 at the winery in San Luis Obispo in December..

Wow. What a pleasant surprise. i can't believe this was under $20. Great sweet pomegranate and cranberry. This is a terrific QPR. Although the nose is very closed the palate certainly delivers. i'll take this over a $20 Burgundy any day of the week.

Very astringent, drying. Might go well with Lamb shank or a breaded veal, but cannot stand alone. Loved the 2005, btw, so we'll keep trying...

A medium-bodied red, wonderful during those cold winter nights...

Wine Tasting NotesThe fruit character leans towards cherry and raspberry in this medium colored Pinot Noir, with aromatic undertones of black tea, violets and cedar. The sweet fruit on the palate is soft and generous balanced by pleasant tannins, finishing with a hint of dry mint and anise. It is an innovative expression to Pinot Noir and designed to be enjoyed in its youth.

The color is dark ruby red without being inky or overly dense. A jammy red berry tone announces the aroma and is then backed up by many layers of complex undertones: cinnamon, tea leaf, bergamot, and fennel, with elements of vanilla and cola as well.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewJust delicious. It's so soft and silky, so easy to sip, and so seductive in lush cherry, cola, vanilla and spice flavors. Drink now for its youthful exuberance.Wine Tasting NotesThe color is dark ruby red without being inky or overly dense. A jammy red berry tone announces the aroma and is then backed up by many layers of complex undertones: cinnamon, tea leaf, bergamot, and fennel, with elements of vanilla and cola as well. The flavors are in harmony with the aroma this wine is not a flirt. It delivers what it promises with soft fruit opening the palate and ripe, dynamic tannins carrying through to a sweet finish.

Tasting Notes:

This wine never lacked for color, but its extract is deceptive. Looking at its deep hue you think it will be big and brawny in the mouth, but just the opposite is true. The aromas are effusively fruity with blueberry dominant. Unusual for us is the lack of any herbal tones except a hint of dry hay. The mouth is full and soft while still being lively and dynamic enough to be a good companion at the table. This is quite a quaffable wine and few will be able to resist its many charms.
