Three Miners Pinot Noir Central Otago Earnscleugh Valley 2004

Member Review by Bill Howard:

Brussel sprouts, tomato juice, lit matches, rosemary, cocoa and soil. Great old world style pinot/burgundy on steroids, beautiful wine, nice long creme brulee finish. Wish this were under $25. Highly recommended $35 91 points WKH

Three Miners grow their grapes at two sites - the 'Home' Block on McPherson Road and, approx. 3km away, the 'Terrace' Block on Earnscleugh Road, towards the historic township of Clyde. The Home Block started life as a sheep farm, and in 1982 was converted to horticulture, growing mainly stone fruit and some pip fruit. The land was purchased by Three Miners in 2000 for the purpose of establishing a vineyard. First plantings in 2000 at this level site were 4Ha of Pinot Noir using clones 10/5, 5 and 6. There are now 14Ha of Pinot Noir planted, along with 1Ha each of Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. The 2-tiered Terraces Block was acquired in 2002 (also converted from stone and pip fruit) and 12Ha of Pinot Noir was planted using clones 5, 6, 114, 115, 667, 743 and 777. In 2007 2Ha was planted in Pinot Gris. Various root stocks have been used at both sites - 101/14, 3306, 3309 and Schwarzman. Read less
