Terlato Vineyards Syrah 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Black pepper, earth and sweet toast greet the nose with a nice touch of olive tapenade. Medium full in the mouth with nicely bright acidity accentuating the red fruit this exhibits early on. There’s a fair amount of tannin still making itself known on the palate along with some spicy oak, but this is coming to a nice balance with some age. The wood tannins still dominate on the finish though there is some fine wild berry and plum skin fruit handing in here as well. Not sure which will win in the long run, though there is a nodule of plummy, sweet blackberry fruit on the finale that does bode well. 89pts

After 50 years in the wine industry, wine is still an inspiration for me. Every vintage brings an anticipation and excitement. After all, it’s a new birth. When I discovered Pinot Grigio in Italy, I was taken by its fresh aromas, its crispness, freshness and the way it paired effortlessly with foods. It was virtually unknown when I brought it to the United States in 1979. Not surprisingly, an entire nation of wine drinkers embraced Pinot Grigio for the same reasons I did. Today Pinot Grigio is the most requested wine in fine restaurants, and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is the quality leader for the varietal. The U.S. was introduced to a new wine, as well as a new level of quality from Italy. I still feel about it today the same way I did the first time I tasted it. When I tasted Syrah from the Rhone Valley, dense, rich and aromatic, it immediately captured my fascination as well. It was a wine that I knew could stand alongside the best of another classic, Cabernet Sauvignon, because the taste profiles were similar: dense, rich and aromatic. We have fashioned our Syrah along those same lines. Of course, like most wine lovers, I have had a lifelong love affair with Bordeaux, the aristocracy of red wines, a blend of classic varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Angels’ Peak is the first of three blends we will introduce. When my sons and I decided to become vintners, our winemaking team found the right soil, and climate conditions that suited our needs. We planted some vineyards, bought others and Terlato Vineyards was born. It is small venture, but a sincere tribute to the wines and winemakers who have inspired us for decades. I regard these winemakers as artists and dreamers. I know this is true because now I am a winemaker myself. I want Terlato Vineyards to stand among the finest wines in the world, with those crafted by my friends. Read less

Very elegant California Syrah! Bright, tart berries, plums and rhubarb with an earthy balance of cocoa nibs and espresso. Great structure for this price point.

Beautiful nose that leads to a balanced, fruity and rich wine. Nice, soft fruit (blackberry and blackcurrent) with an undercurrent of baking spice on the finish. Very nice.

Chocolate and cherry attack, with acidity on the back end. Will age well. Big and complex.

The Terlato family brings over 50 years of experience in the fine wine industry. The wines from Terlato Family Vineyards illustrate the family's commitment and passion to crafting world-class wine. Each varietal is developed by carefully selecting vineyards from the most esteemed viticultural area of California, insisting on limited production of handcrafted wines. These wines are authentic expressions of their region and are created with the intention of serving gastronomy. Terlato Vineyards found perfect Syrah conditions in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, which shares important characteristics with France's Rhne Valley.
