Tenuta Guado Al Tasso Antinori Red Blend Bolgheri Superiore 1997

Winemaker's Notes:

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Syrah and other red grape varieties. The latter part of winter and the beginining of spring were very mild for the time of the year and also very dry. This produced early budding - some 10 days earlier than average. In April the temperature suddenly dropped, causing an arrest in the growth of the buds. The summer was very hot and sunny and this weather continued for the whole of September and for the duration of the harvest which meant that at the time of picking, the grapes were exceptionally healthy and with a high sugar concentration. Overall the 1997 harvest has been somewhat less than expected in terms of quantity - but in terms of quality, this is an exceptional vintage, probably even better than the much acclaimed 1990 vintage and one of the greatest of the last fifty years. Merlot was harvested at mid September, approximately a week before the Cabernet Sauvignon. After destemming and light crushing, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon were vinified separately; maceration took place in stainless steel tanks over a period of 12 days, during which time alcoholic fermentation was also completed, at a temperature never exceeding 30 °C. The resulting wine is very rich in colour, but soft on the palate without any astringency. The wines were then transferred to new French oak barriques (Troncais and Alliers) where malolactic fermentation was completed by the year's end. The wines were then racked, blended and then returned to the barrels for about 14 months aging, followed by bottling and a further 10 months minimum in bottles before release. Alcohol : 13,5% Vol. Guado al Tasso, meaning literally "Badger's Ford", takes its name from a common sight at the estate of Tenuta Guado al Tasso, Bolgheri, where it is produced. The vineyard is at an elevation between 44 and 58 metres (145 and 190 feet) above sea-level on stony, slightly calcareous soils. Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located 60 miles southwest of Florence, near the medieval village of Bolgheri, in an area known as the Maremma. The 900 hectares (2,223 acres) estate stretches up from the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the hills, and aside from extensive vineyards, also grows wheat, corn, sunflowers, tomatoes and olive trees. Guado al Tasso was first produced in 1990; the successive vintages are 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996. All the vintages have been produced in limited quantities. Intensely fruity, more of cherry than cassis, with hints of toast, coffee and dark chocolate. Finely structured and complex; balanced, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. Displays unmistakable varietal flavor while retaining strong regional character.

The Antinori family has been making wine for over six hundred years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. Throughout its long history, spanning 26 generations, the family has always personally managed the business making innovative, sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for tradition and the land. Today Marchese Piero Antinori is director of the company, assisted by his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, who are personally involved in the business. The qualities of tradition, passion and instinct have made Antinori one of the leading Italian producers of fine quality wines. Every vintage, every terroir, every idea is a new beginning, a new quest to raise our quality margins. As Marchese Piero loves to repeat: “ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation”. As well as the family's traditional heritage of estates in Tuscany and Umbria, investments have been made over time in other areas highly suited to quality wine production, in Italy and abroad, in a quest to promote new terroirs, rich in winegrowing potential. Antinori continually experiment with their vineyards and cellars, with selections of native and international clones, growing methods, vineyard altitudes, fermentation methods and temperatures, traditional and modern vinification techniques, types of wood, size and age of barrels, and various bottle-ageing periods. Piero Antinori says: “We have shown over the years that it is possible to produce internationally-acclaimed fine stylish, elegant wines in Tuscany and Umbria while maintaining their original character”. Looking to the future, Antinori explains: “There are many books in our library but they are never enough for us. Our mission is not yet complete: we are driven to express the vast potential of our vineyards and reconcile all that is new and undiscovered with Tuscany's traditional, cultural, agricultural, artistic and literary heritage. These things represent the identity of Antinori, and one of our greatest strengths is that we are in Tuscany – our essential ‘Tuscan-ness', if you will”. Read less

This is perhaps my favorite wine in the whole world. Since spending a very nice vacation at this Winery, in Italy. I've come real attached to it. It has always been at the top of my list. Its truly delicious and smooth/ crisp on the buds. My friends ask for it at dinner parties quite frequently. Especially the Ladies.

The production of Vin Santo in Tuscany goes back at least until the Middle Ages: it is considered a true regional specialty and the Antinori family has always produced it as well. The first vintage of the Vin Santo Tenute Marchese Antinori, however, an entirely natural product, dates from 1987.

Made by one of the biggest wine companies in Italy that had its origins in 1385, this wine stands up to its name as “Super-Tuscan”. It’s an intense ruby red with aromas of red berries and oak. A very well-balanced flavor with cassis, cherry, and a hint of chocolate, which combine for a silky, rich finish.
