Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2011 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon offers vibrant chocolate-covered cherry aromas along with notes of roasted chestnuts and black tea with clove spice. The wine has a lovely core of red berry fruit along with bigger tannins and a pleasing cardamom note on the finish. The wine’s structured tannins, concentrated fruit core and pleasing minerality point to this wine’s ability to age.The vineyard blocks in S.L.V. provided a “painter’s palette” of Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics with which to create this blend. As the majority of the 1970s-era vines have aged past their grape-producing prime, they have been gradually replanted, perpetuating the life of this historic vineyard. The “grande dame” of the vineyard, S.L.V. Block 4, planted in 1972, still graces this blend. These vines along with blocks on the eastern side of S.L.V., characterized by their fire-borne volcanic soils, give this wine its structure and sense of minerality along with concentrated dark fruit flavors and ripe, elegant tannins. Vines in alluvial soils in the western part of the vineyard add vibrant fruit accent notes and heady aromatics. Each lot was vinified and aged separately in small French oak barrels for 20 months, allowing the characteristics of each block to develop. In the latter stages of aging, the barrel lots were blended to create the 2011 offering." -Winery

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars:
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

From magnum. Just awesome on the nose with deep olivy fruit, smoky chipotle notes and layers of earth, leather, ash and herb that kept evolving. In the mouth this was round and perfectly mature with all the subtle spices and herb of the nose appearing on the velvetty palate. The tannins have mostly melted away leaving a broad palate impression well supported by the wines integrated acidity. I loved this. A great bottle. 95pts

The classic. You just can't go wrong when you order a bottle of this baby. It's not too big, a little jam and fruit but smooth as a baby's bottom. Yum.

a little overpriced and young...had a bottle recently @ capital grill in NYC and was disappointed...for $120 i felt it could have been more complex...our 2nd bottle was half the price and matched much better with our steaks (btw it was a pirramimma shiraz from australia...amazing) but i digress...stags leap overrated

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon SLV Estate shows off deep layers of expressive black fruit, licorice, white flowers and tar. Here, too, the influence of Antinori is felt in the wine's polish, even if the real leap in quality does not take place until 2010 for this bottling. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the big, dramatic finish. This is a hugely delicious wine with plenty of intensity and sheer personality. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. Rich and inviting, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers powerful blackberry and black cherry aromas with hints of cigar box and spice. The black fruit carries over onto the palate and is accented by notes of anise, mandarin orange, violets and cassis. The tannins are smooth and fine-grained, allowing the wine to flow smoothly across the palate. The wine has great acidity and a persistent fruit-driven finish. Serve S.L.V. with a dry-aged porterhouse steak, grilled game or a wild mushroom tart. - WineryBarrel Aging:20 months84% new French oak...

Planted in 1970, this vineyard achieved international fame when three-year-old vines from the 1973 harvest produced a wine that stunned the wine world when it bested some of France s greatest wines in a 1976 blind tasting known as the Judgment of Paris.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and owner Warren Winarski can arguably claim to have put Napa Valley wines on the world map. It was exactly 25 years ago this month when Stag's Leap Cabernet won the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting in May 1976, beating out the best classified Bordeaux made the world stop and look to Napa Valley. 25 Years later they're still producing some of the best wines in the world. The quality and character of the Stag's Leap wines also lead to the Stags Leap District being granted AVA status. That quality carries through their entire line and shows through in Artemis, their Napa Valley Cab that's a blend of estate grapes from Fay, SLV and Arcadia vineyards with grapes from other top quality Napa growers.

In a successful year, it rivals Stag’s Leap’s best wines, including Cask 23, and 2008 was a very successful year. Blended with 2% Merlot, and aged in lots of new French oak, the wine is, in a word, stunning. Rich, flashy blackberry and dark chocolate flavors are anchored by an earthiness suggesting cured olives and dried herbs. Delicious now, this beauty should develop additional complexities throughout the decade."

The 2008 S.L.V. is the 35th vintage since the 1973 S.L.V. won the Paris Tasting in 1976. This rich and generous Cabernet Sauvignon opens with crushed blackberry and ripe plum aromas, accented by notes of anise, fennel and cedar.

According to Robert Parker - The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis reveals slightly more richness and density than the 2007. The aromatics are similar in this medium-bodied, balanced, pleasant wine. It should drink well for a decade.
