Shafer Rentless Syrah 2006
This blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah is a juicy feast of black plum, blackberries, meatiness, coffee, briar fruit, black pepper and mocha. The ripe tannins bring it all together for a delicious, long-lasting finish. Food Affinities: A heavyweight like Relentless complements similar concentrated flavors found in dishes such as Syrah-braised short ribs, smoked lamb with Relentless reduction, roast duck, as well as beef and game.
From a modest beginning of 1,000 cases in 1978, the winery has grown steadily until reaching its present size of 32,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sangiovese and Syrah. Today Shafer wines are available in major markets nationwide and in many foreign markets.
RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
As with the issues of the 2006 One Point Five, I detected some Brett on this wine, but it didn't take away from the experience completely. Still a complex powerhouse, but I can't quite give it a 90...89 plus with the hope that it improves w/ age.
Rich nose of dark chocolate and cola. Very dark and inky in the glass. Hints of lavender. Also, some black and loganberry. Delightful palate of ever changing floral tones, dark red fruit, some pomegranate, some earth and also nice charred/smoky qualities. Well balanced. - Tasted at Khoury's 6/2/10
Awesome wine! Dark, inky, deep purple, great legs. Lots of black pepper and blackberries. Very concentrated and lots of kick. Delicious. I will buy it again.
Delicious. I put a little into an au poivre sauce tonight, and it was great... Only about half a glass... But, I guess I'm still the a$$hole who reduced relentless... Once I got it in the glass it did not disappoint. Great fruit flavors with that incredible spice and full body. Love it. Made for a truly memorable evening. Rich, dark fruit alongside floral and spicy notes. Would love to have a chance to drink again. My Rating: 94/100 For the Price: 92/100
Fantastic example of "New" World syrah, deep, deep, purple colour, mouth full of red/lilac fruits, taste stays forever. When I put the glass down I already long for the next sip. Still the best is yet to come, drink 2015 for ultimate pleasure.
This is a gift of a yummy wine. Smooth and yet the grapes burst in your mouth. SO well balanced and for its cost, be smart and by yourself a case! Aerate for at least 2 hours if you want fireworks finish.
Four and a half glasses

From Shafer Vineyards comes this incredible Syrah that's named for their winemaker Elia Fernandez, who's pursuit of quality is relentless. Robert Parker said "One of Napa’s most prominent and respected wineries, Shafer is a poster boy for remarkable and consistent quality across the board. All of this is the work of the brilliant father and son team of John and Doug Shafer as well as their long-term winemaker and vineyard manager, Elias Fernandez. With over 200-plus acres of estate holdings, and 55 surrounding their winery in Stags Leap, this is a winery that never seems to disappoint. The 2006 Relentless may be even better. It possesses an opaque purple hue as well as a grapy, smoky perfume displaying scents of roasted meats, blackberries, licorice, and charcoal. This packed and stacked, full-bodied 2006 should drink beautifully for 10-15 years." Extremely limited!
