The 70 acre Red Shoulder Ranch was purchased by Doug Shafer back in 1988. Carefully selected, small-cluster Chardonnay clones were planted and since the first vintage in 1994 this wine has been a standout among California Chards. It's always barrel fermented using only wild yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity. The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an important role in Shafer's natural farming practices. This 2010 is a triple 90+ scorer. Wine Enthusiast Magazine rated it 93 points saying "Another terrific offering from Shafer, this is a wine that seems to do well regardless of the vintage. It always shows a firm minerality and slight herbaceousness, with tropical fruit flavors and a smoky coating of fine oak. It's a shade less opulent than the 2009, making this very elegant and refined, yet still rich and complex. Don't drink it too cold—airing brings out subtle nuances."

The 2011 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch has a similar aromatic and flavor profile as the 2010 with more textural richness and oiliness because of the presence of botrytis in this vintage. I have to say, the 2011 is highly intriguing. It will be interesting

The 2010 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch reveals a brighter profile than the 2009. Citrus, flowers, crushed rocks and mint wrap around the energetic, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. Vintage: 2009 01/10/2013

The 2009 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is a gorgeous wine laced with expressive fruit and an open, radiant personality. Subtle hints of French oak and flowers are nicely layered into the finish. The 2009 was aged 75% in French oak and 25% in stainless steel. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2015.

Winemakers Notes - Our winemaker Elias Fernandez says this may be the vintage of the decade. It was a lengthy, cool, mild summer which allowed the fruit to hang under near ideal conditions for a long, long time. Add to that, throughout our vineyards we saw looser clusters of smaller berries.
