The 2011 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch has a similar aromatic and flavor profile as the 2010 with more textural richness and oiliness because of the presence of botrytis in this vintage. I have to say, the 2011 is highly intriguing. It will be interesting
The 2010 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch reveals a brighter profile than the 2009. Citrus, flowers, crushed rocks and mint wrap around the energetic, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. The 70 acre Red Shoulder Ranch was purchased by Doug Shafer back in 1988. Carefully selected, small-cluster Chardonnay clones were planted and since the first vintage in 1994 this wine has been a standout among California Chards. It's always barrel fermented using only wild yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity. The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an important role in Shafer's natural farming practices. This 2010 is a triple 90+ scorer. Wine Enthusiast Magazine rated it 93 points saying "Another terrific offering from Shafer, this is a wine that seems to do well regardless of the vintage. It's a shade less opulent than the 2009, making this very elegant and refined, yet still rich and complex. Don't drink it too cold—airing brings out subtle nuances."

The 1995 reveals a super-rich nose, considerable body and intensity, high extraction of flavor, yet no sense of heaviness or flabbiness - no doubt because the underlying zingy acidity gives the wine vibrancy and lift. This non-malolactic Chardonnay is aged in 50% new French oak casks, with balance in one-year old barrels. Well-endowed, with considerable glycerin and a blossoming complexity, the 1995 should drink well for another 2-3 years.
Yellow straw. Moderately full-bodied. Full acidity. Moderately extracted. Lime, citrus, oak spice. Vibrant, lively and structured with impressive concentration and a lingering persistence of citrus acids. This should develop more complexity with further bottle age.
