Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2009
Selvapiana is owned by Francesco Giuntini, descendant of the original owner, Michele Giuntini who bought the estate in 1827. His adopted son, Federico Masetti-Giuntini now runs the estate and makes the wines with consultant Franco Bernabei. Federico is the son of the ‘fattore’ (estate manager) who worked with the Giuntini family all his life. Federico was born on the estate, as was his sister Silvia, who is also involved in running the business. The estate covers 245 hectares of mixed vineyard and olive groves. The wine has a lovely perfume of cherries and spiced plums that gives way to a ripe, supple yet elegant fruit on the palate. The acid is nicely moderated, serving to corset the fruit and lift the perfumes on the finish.
Editorial Reviews for Selvapiana Chianti Rufina
A little funky on the nose with notes of rust, dried cow stall, ash, a little tobacco and fine strawberry fruit. Softish on entry and open knit, with a fine core of clear strawberry fruit. The finish is bright and refreshed with ripe acids. Overall a tad simple but very Chianti, shows pure strawberry fruit in a rustic style. 87pts
Looks are deceiving! Light-bodied in appearance, but much more weighty on the palate, with dark fruit flavors and even a little smoke on the nose. Keeps evolving in the glass.
Note from tasting: very astringent, need to have with food, light color
Light red in color, slightly muddy, herbal bouquet, licorice, dry, astringent. [From "The Other Wines of Tuscany" at Bin 105, Lincoln NE, 30 March 2013.]
