Sandhi Sanford and Benedict Chardonnay 92 Swj 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"Light, bright gold. Orange zest, pear and white flowers on the fragrant nose, with complicating notes of clove and iodine. Sappy and dense but lithe as well, with emphatic mineral character to the flavors of lemon curd, poached pear and honeysuckle. Shows impressive flavor intensity but there's zero excess fat or weight here. Finishes with intense minerality and very good floral persistence...93" IWC 10/11 “…Restraint, class, purity and, dare I say, balance…92” SWJ 07/11 "...opens with a burst of rich, explosive fruit, then turns decidedly more mineral and inward on the mid-palate and finish. It is a striking wine in every way, with just enough fleshiness to support an intense, focused expression of Chardonnay. The Sanford & Benedict was aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 12 months followed by an additional 6 months in concrete...90" WA 08/11 joint venture from three of California’s finest names in wine community brings passion, extremely high quality standards and of course mountains of experience from practically every corner of the wine business today. The three men are: Rajat Parr, Master Sommelier-Beverage Director of the Michael Mina Restaurant Group-Co-Owner of the Burgundy temple RN74-author of Secrets of a Sommelier Charles Banks, founder & former owner of Jonata-former co-owner of the CULT ICON Screaming Eagle-partner in Leviathan Winery-owner of Mulderbosch winery South Africa-Senior Executve Editior of Fine Wine Magazines Sashi Moorman, former chef turned winemaker/vitner-stops along the way included Ojai Vineyards-winemaker for Stolpman Vineyards-California winemaker for the critically acclaimed and international Evening Land Vineyards-owner Piedrasassi Vineyards The combination of these three men in making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir has quietly been taking the California wine scene by storm but that storm is about to break-out world-wide and Sandhi is poised to be one of the next big names in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. Jancis Robinson, the Master of Wine and London based wine critic for the Financial Times recently included Sandhi wines as some of her top picks from the region. For those of you that are a bit confused by the name Sandhi it does have a very poinent meaning to the winery: “an ancient Sanskrit word meaning alliance or collaboration, reflects the partnership of its creators.” However, these gentleman know that great wine comes from great vineyards and that is why Sandhi is in the process of developing new vineyards while simultaneously acquiring access to some of the most legendary vineyards in Sta Rita Hills and Santa Barbara area. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is one of those historic sites that has stood the test of time. “Planted in 1971, Sanford & Benedict is the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard in Santa Barbara County, and one of the most iconic vineyards in California. Its north-facing location at the epicenter of the Santa Rita Hills appellation allows the grapes to ripen perfectly in the cool and foggy weather. The marine-based soil (clay and diatomaceous) delivers smaller yields and cluster. Sandhi Wine’s grapes come from blocks that are own-rooted.” Sandhiwines.com

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
