Royal Salute Scotch 21 Yr 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

97 points James Suckling: Aromas of blackberries and blueberries follow through to a full body and velvety tannins. This is so layered and deep. Fabulous texture. Better in 2014. We will see in the end whether 2006 or 2007 is better. Try in 2016. (1/25/12)

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino wraps across the palate with layers of sweet red cherries, flowers, licorice and spices. Soft and sensual, the 2007 impresses for its impeccable balance and long, suave finish. The 2007 kept improving over the time I followed it. This is a vintage built on silky elegance and expressive fleshiness in the fruit, but those elements need time to emerge fully. There is an inner resonance to the 2007 I find very appealing. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2025.

Pure fruit here with lot of currant and berry. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins. Long and delicious. Needs time. Best after 2009.

Medium-bodied and fresh, boasting cherry, tobacco, iron and tea flavors. This red starts out smooth, picking up tannins on the dry finish. Best from 2014 through 2022.

This wine sparked wide debate at the Brunello en Primeur tasting because of its new, more streamlined style. Siro Pacenti's 2004 Brunello is not the concentrated blackberry and chocolate fudge bomb of the past. It's still a meaty, layered wine laced with pretty layers of spice, mineral and ash. But instead of black concentration, it now exhibits ruby luminosity and a fresh, menthol finish. We are impressed.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino saturates the palate with deep layers of dark red fruit, violets, new leather and spices. The aromas and flavors grow beautifully with air, showing remarkable intensity all the way through to the expansive, textured finish. This is a brilliant effort from Giancarlo Pacenti. The Brunello saw 18-20 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barrels, of which roughly 80% were new. The vineyard sources are approximately 4.5 hectares in Sant'Angelo and Piancornello (in the south of Montalcino) and 5 hectares in Pelagrilli (in the north). Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

Perfumed with rose and ripe cherry. Full-bodied, with bright acidity and clean, mineral, floral and berry character on the palate. Tight and firm, but shows wonderful promise. This is chewy and develops in the glass. Best from 2011 through 2017.

Gorgeous, perfumed aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry follow through to a full body, with super well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Wonderfully crafted for the vintage. Best after 2009.
