Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige 2009
Early 20th century,Seraphin Sabon is getting married with Marie Jausset, daughter of Romain and Marie-Angelie Brunel. Born in Serignan of Comtat, North of Orange, in the Vaucluse region,he takes his wife family's, wich origins dated from 1560. He regularly expands it. Marie gives birth to three sons, one of them is Roger. He founds the Domain in 1952 and now adays more than 15 hectares are located in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation.
The nose was dark and brooding with black raspberry, seared meat, peppery spice, cedar, earth tones and hints of menthol. On the palate it was medium-bodied and rich yet structured with dense, ripe blackberry, plum reduction, and exotic spices. Dark fruit saturated the senses throughout the long finish as fruit slowly melted from memory leaving hints of tannin and spice. I immediately fell in love with this wine. After an hour-long decant, the nose began to pulsate with dark, rich fruits. Although this is young, it can be enjoyed now, but truly needs a number of years to really shine. And shine it should, this was one of the most balanced CdP's I've tasted from the 2010 vintage.

Another step up in quality (but not by much, and it’s a step up in price as well), the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige is one of the top efforts in this outstanding vintage. Mostly Grenache, with 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre and other permitted varieties, it offers classic black raspberry, cassis, licorice and smoked-meat-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated and with a stacked mid-palate and sweet tannin, it builds on the palate and will have 15+ years of overall longevity.
Showing more fruit and depth, yet still a more reserved version of this cuvee, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that will spend 18 months in mostly older foudre, yet with 30% in barrels. Medium to full-bodied, pure and lively, with clean, classical aromas and flavors, solid concentration and fine tannin, it will have 12–15 years of longevity. Drink 2015–2027.
Muscular grip holds the edges, while the core of plum, black currant and steeped blackberry fruit waits in reserve, with black tea, pastis and licorice root notes on the finish. Shows solid range and depth. Best from 2015 through 2023.
Inky purple. Sexy, intensely perfumed cherry and dark berries on the nose. Smooth and seamless in texture, offering deep blackberry and cherry-cola flavors enlivened by bright acidity and a smoky mineral nuance. Smoothly blends richness and vivacity and finishes with excellent clarity and persistence — and just a hint of tannins.
An absolutely profound offering, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige requires 5andndash;6 years of cellaring given its massive concentration and tannic structure. The wine was relatively closed the day I tasted it, but it did display an inky/purple color along with hints of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and espresso beans. Full-bodied and moderately tannic with gorgeous freshness, glycerin and a skyscraper-like texture, this superb cuvee should be at its finest between 2018andndash;2030+.
This has power and guile, with dense layers of blackberry, Black Mission fig and black currant fruit lined with substantial but velvety tannins. The long, spice- and black tea-infused finish has a good bass line in the background. Best from 2017 through 2030.
Once again the Sabons have hit a home run with their 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige. Opaque purple-hued with a full-bodied mouthfeel, massive concentration, abundant tannin and good acidity, it will not be as drinkable early on as the 2009 Prestige. The 2010 possesses some of the structural characteristics of the 2005, and thus requires 5-6 years of patience. It should keep for an atypically long time for a Chateauneuf du Pape andmdash; 25andndash;30 years. It is a brilliant, majestic, massive Chateauneuf du Pape from the Sabons.
