Rodney Strong Chardonnay Estate Chalk Hill 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities. During the twelve months of barrel aging, we regularly stirred the “lees” in barrel, which imparts an elegant fullness and creamy texture on the palate. In the glass, the wine is both creamy and crisp, with flavors of golden delicious apple, Meyer lemon, baking spices with a hint of minerality on the long finish.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Bright and fruity aromas of green apple and peach with honeysuckle and vanilla on the nose. Wonderfully thick and full in the mouth, this has tart fresh citrus notes coming through powerfully in the center, round and firm yet quite zesty and lively throughout and turning to more lemon and light butter towards the finish With a hint of white pepper.

Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities. during the thirteen months of aging, we regularly stirred the “lees” in barrel, and later in tank, which gives a certain fullness and creamy texture on the palate. Encouraging malolactic fermentation added additional character, and in the glass the wine is both creamy and crisp, with abundant fruit character, mineral and toasty oak flavors. Enjoy over the next one to three years.~ The Winery

Extremely well balanced with good acidity, ripe pear, melon, citrus and a slight touch of oak. Smooth mouthfeel that didn't have that acid bite on the after taste.

Typical Sonoma (Northern California) nose of wild meadow flowers in June with a whiff of oak and spice. Nice, transparent yellow-green hue associated with a young chardonnay. The entry is clean, with toasty oak barrique, ginger and allspice followed by a clean, medium finish. A well-crafted, satisfying draft if a bit hot. Recommended for any summer patio offering - especially with seafood appetizers.

Wonderfully rich and creamy chardonnay with abundant tropical fruit flavors. - Tasted at Total Wine & More 3/27/10 - Tasted again at UNLVino 4/10/10 Didn't like it as much this time, perhaps open too long or a bad bottle.

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast "This is a great price for a Chardonnay of this sophistication. It satisfies for the butter-cream, buttered toast and vanilla richness to the pineapple and pear fruit, yet is balanced with crisp acidity and minerally elegance. Drink now."
