Robert Oatley Red Bordeaux Blend Mudgee Cabernet-Merlot 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Ripe, spicy, licorice, leather, char, burnt sugar, vanilla, candied black currant, A touch simple with a smoky/oaky-fruity dichotomy. Soft in the mouth yet it still has a fair amount of acid. Instead of being integrated the acid hangs obtrusively above the fruit. Gentle red fruits on the palate, some nicely ripe tannins, not much complexity nor detail here. Red currant, woody, candied cherry, a bit astringent on the finish. A simple quaffing wine. 83pts

The Robert Oatley Vineyards winery is the Mudgee region’s largest and most technologically advanced facility. Located on the family’s Montrose Vineyard, it has a 10,000 ton capacity, 9.5 million liters storage capacity, over 2,500 predominantly French oak hogshead barrels and the world’s most technologically advanced bottling line capable of filling and packaging more than 10,000 bottles per hour. Bob Oatley’s winemakers, lead by Chris Hancock and Senior Winemaker James Manners, craft modern, authentically Australian wines intentionally suited to the American palate – wines that people simply enjoy drinking. In 2006, the family purchased the historic Craigmoor property on the outskirts of the Mudgee township. The winery, now a tasting room and visitor center, was established in 1858 and the surrounding vineyards grow some of the finest grapes in the region. Read less

cellar this one for a few years. I decanted for 3 hours and only got a glimpse of the potential. but by the time this was realized, most of the bottle was gone. a Bordeaux of this quality would probably cost twice as much. this fits steak like a glove. long smooth blackberry finish.

what it lacks in fruit, it sort of substitutes for in a slight mint and asparagus quality...touch of earthiness, chalkiness, middle of the road, inoffensive.
