Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2003
I wish I would have bought cases of this when it sold for twenty-something dollars a bottle. Rich, deep full flavors. I particularly like wines that are described as having a cassis flavor - and this has it. Absolutely delicious.
Big sweet oak nose, maybe, some clove. Very “watery” at the front of the tongue. It takes a second to detect “standard” cabernet sauvignon cassis. Then there is a sourness around the edges of the tongue. Finally, unreined tannins step in. This is not a sipping wine. However, with some solid food, the sourness and the tannins are both calmed down, and this is a quite pleasant glass.
Raspberry, Mint and Cocoa on the nose. Lots of cherry on the palate with hints of chocolate but very oaky, a little too much for my tastes. Decent grip with a fairly long finish. The wine lacks body. Seems to me to be past its prime. Granted, I purchased this bottle in 2011 and considering the establishment I got it from there's a good chance that it spent several years stored improperly, but since it was $3 on the clearance rack I figured why not. OK now but could have been much better a few years back. If you have some on your rack, time to drink up...
dark red hue, intense berry flavors, ethereal, smooth tannin structure, bit alcoholic finish, lingering.
Dark black currant, chocolate, black olives, coffee, strong tannin. Medium sweet, medium acidity, high fruit, high oak, full body.
Smooth and Rich Cabernet...as advertised.

Dense and compact, with a tightly wound, rich core of earthy currant, cedar, spice and cherry flavors, finishing with chewy tannins. Great length, but will need to age at least until 1998.
Mondavi has also turned in a very strong effort in the good, but generally unexciting 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage. In contrast to his compelling 1987 Reserve, the 1988 is much softer, and not nearly as concentrated. It is ideal for drinking over the next 7-10 years. It has a gorgeously smoky, cassis, and vanillin-scented bouquet, ripe, round, generously endowed flavors, soft acids, and moderate tannins in its smooth as silk finish. Much more advanced and approachable than the 1987 Reserve, it is ideal for near-term gratification.
Superripe, almost port-like aromas of roasted plum, cassis, mint and smoky oak. Offers wonderful sweetness and richness in the mouth. Very long on the back end; the substantial tannins become apparent quite late and cover more of the palate. This wine's suave finish makes the above Cabernet seem almost rustic in comparison. An impressive '96.
Supple and rich, bursting with ripe fruit in a generous style, with beautifully focused black cherry and currant flavors that are lively and elegant, tannins in the background, very fine texture and flavors that linger long and full on the finish. Great harmony, delicacy and toasty French oak. Drink 1992ndash;2000.
If you missed out on Robert Mondavi's 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, try to find a few bottles of the sumptuously rich, decadent, showy 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve that is about to be released. It is a sweeter, riper, more unctuously-styled Cabernet. While it may lack some of the classicism of the 1991 Reserve, it is s super-rich, full-bodied, flamboyant, unctuously-textured wine that should drink well for 20+ years.

We handcrafted the wine in our To Kalon Fermentation Cellar with hand-sorting of the clusters, gravity-flow movement of the must and wine, and fermentation in a traditional oak tank.
