Robert Craig Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Affinity 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Aroma: Complex fragrance of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and dark espresso, with underlying crushed granite and floral notes of dusty rose petal and violets. Flavors: Rich, concentrated black and red fruit flavors are wide and deep. Sleek, silky tannins bring substantial weight to the mid-palate, topped with layers of cassis, graphite, roasted coffee and violets. Finish: The sweet tannins stride down the finish, bringing along black pepper, cigar box spice and a pronounced minerality. General: A dense, racy and balanced Cabernet Sauvignon, perfect for a ribeye. Decanting is recommended.

Robert Craig’s winemaking philosophy is that Cabernet Sauvignons should be made with minimal intervention, so that unique vineyard qualities are displayed in the finished wine. Distinguished by concentrated varietal character, appealing aromas and intense fruit flavors, these Cabernets are balanced, integrated and luscious upon release, while offering great potential for long-term aging. The Robert Craig Winery is located at 2300 atop Howell Mountain, overlooking Napa Valley. The winemaking regimen is undertaken with great care and attention to detail. Each vineyard block is monitored as harvest approaches to assure the proper degree of ripeness, and grapes are picked in small lots. Individual lots are processed separately during fermentation in order to maximize color and character development and closely manage the influence of tannin. Frequent pump-overs in early fermentation produce full extraction of the fruit while providing ripe, round tannins. This small-lot format expands the blending options, allowing for fine-tuning of the wine style. All Cabernets are aged in French oak barrels to gain added complexity. Read less

Great wine given 1-2 hrs to breathe. Solid wine for the price.

Good full ruby-red. Crystallized black cherry, coffee, mocha and loam on the nose, lifted by spices. Broad, smooth and tight-grained, with lovely intensity and lift to the flavors of black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate. Finishes with dusty tannins and a firm spine of acidity.

Grown in the foothills of Mount George, this is mostly cabernet sauvignon (82 percent) with petit verdot, merlot and small amounts of franc and malbec. Itrsquo;s a broad, richly oaked wine, packed with cherry-scented fruit holding robust tannins. Unyielding for now, this needs two or three years for the tannins to mellow.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Affinity bursts from the glass with an exciting array of dark red berries, flowers, licorice and sweet spices. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding brightness and lift.

The wineryandrsquo;s Affinity bottling has had mixed results over the years, but this is one of their best, right up there with the 2007. Itandrsquo;s a beautiful wine, absolutely dry, tannic, smooth and complex in black currant flavor. A bright streak of acidity provides wonderful balance, and should help the wine to age through at least 2019.
