We made up our minds one day to give up our comfortable lifestyle and leave Japan in order to try our hand at making wine. Our approach was anything but conventional, as neither had any formal training in the field. So in 1991, when we packed up and left for Bourgogne, France during the Gulf War with our 4 year old daughter in tow, our family & friends called our scheme a "maboroshi" of a dream. To them, maboroshi appeared to be a frivolous hallucination, but to us it was the beginning of an extraordinary adventure. Tom started practically going door-to-door to every great wine domaine in the Cote d’Or for a chance to work in the region. Thanks to the gracious invitation & instruction of Charles Rousseau, proprietor of Gevrey-Chambertin's Domaine Armand Rousseau, he was trained in every aspect of winemaking from vineyard to bottle. Toiling in sub-zero conditions to prune the meter high vines in the Clos St. Jacques vineyard proved to be his favorite experience. Tom's initiation to old-world winemaking laid the foundation for our eventual move to California’s wine country. Again we found ourselves in a new world with little connection. Between studying winemaking & microbiology Tom fortunately began work as a cellar worker at Stonestreet Winery in 1993, eventually working various production jobs at different wineries prior to becoming enologist at Michel-Schlumberger Winery in Healdsburg, California. Meanwhile Rebecca's true interests developed while studying at the University of Bourgogne and eventually led her to the study of viticulture. Through good friends & acquaintances and perhaps a lot of luck, she's worked with some of the top winemakers, grape growers and viticulturists of both Napa & Sonoma counties. In particular, she attributes much of her inspiration from two great women in wine, Erin Green & Helen Turley, whose influence has been far-reaching. Finally in 1999, after chasing this vision, it became a reality for us when we began our own wine brand. And in retrospect, this is why we decided to name our wine "Maboroshi”, a Japanese term for extraordinary visions. It is our passion for wine and our commitment to each other’s dreams that has driven us this far. This drive comes from the desire to make small lots of great wine that we can enjoy as well as share with our friends all over the world. We continue to search for the best sites and sources for our wine grapes, and now include our own estate Pinot Noir vineyard, coincidentally named Maboroshi Vineyard, to our story. Read less
