In 1979, John and Harry Mariani, owners of the U.S. importer, Banfi Vintners, acquired a mid-18th century winery, known as Bruzzone, revitalized it and renamed the facility Vigne Regali. Here, with the same detailed care as a century ago, our skilled winemakers produce L'Ardì Dolcetto d'Acqui D.O.C., a ruby-red still wine, and two exceptional sparkling wines: Banfi Brut Metodo Tradizionale Classico, and "Rosa Regale" Brachetto d'Acqui D.O.C.G., from the La Rosa single vineyard. The rare Brachetto, a semi-dry, red sparkling wine cherished by the Courts of Europe two centuries ago, owes its reincarnation to Banfi. Just a few kilometers from Strevi lies the Principessa Gavia estate established by the Mariani family around the same time as Vigne Regali. This single vineyard is dedicated exclusively to the cultivation of the Cortese di Gavi grape, the sole white grape used to make the prized still wine Principessa Gavia Gavi and the lightly frizzante Principessa Perlante. Fairly simple straight forward Italian white. Hints of lemon are mixed with ripe pear and a touch of white pepper. This has medium acidity and a short to medium finish.

Love this wine for summer. Get it at Argo or Lucas Liquors for $12.99.

A squirt of lemon juice on fish would be one way to describe the nose of this unprepossessing wine - usually perfect for nondescript mid-winter evenings in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Very neutral flavored with light straw color and residual spritz. Short finish. A somewhat pedestrian wine.

Straw bright, clean aromas of jasmine water and yellow apple, notes of lemon cucumber sparkling mineral water, focused with bright frizzate and good length. Great with scampi, scallops and chicken with lemons.

Light in weight, but slightly oily in texture, this Gavi packs in the basics: apple, pear and citrus fruit and a hint of almonds. Dry and citrusy on the finish, making it a candidate for seafood or assorted hors d'oeuvres.

Winemaker's notes: Pale straw in color and an intense, fresh and fruity bouquet, with hints of pineapple and green apple. Crisp with gentle acidity and a dry, balanced aftertaste. 100% Cortese

If you are searching for a romantic wine, search no further. This wine comes from a historical tale of a Princess Gavia who fell in love with a man in a lower class. They were forbidden to be together by her father, the King. They fled the area to continue their courtship only to be found by the King's men when the fiance drunkenly told the innkeeper of their escape. Once she was brought back to the kingdom, the King found his daughter truly did love this man and blessed their union. He named the town after his beloved Gavia and named the wine that "sealed their deal" Gavi. Considered to be one of Italy's most favorable dry white wines made from Cortese grapes harvested in Gavia. It brings a nice flair to Asian cuisine with its vibrant fruit salad appeal and stupendous acidity. It has a distinguishable personality and well-balanced finish that is a must try! It is a great alternative to Pinot Grigios that sometimes cannot hold up to the bold spices in American cuisine - not to mention, the romance it provides.

Wine Tasting NotesConsidered the premier dry white wine of Italy, Principessa Gavia compares favorably with the world's noble wines. Superlative with a distinct personality, Principessa is fruity, fresh and crisp with a gentle acidity and balanced finish. An ideal accompaniment with all shellfish, it also marries well with fish, veal and grilled chicken, as well as with the delicate flavor variations of Japanese cuisine.
