Preston of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley Old Vines/Old Clones 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy on the nose, with hints of black pepper, cured sausage and licorice over black fruits. This is tart on entry with lovely fresh blackberry fruit accented with tar and strawberry fruit. The tannins are soft and this gains complex notes of vanilla, tobacco and late-to-pop brambly fruit. A nice old school style of Zin, and one that looks likely to improve over the mid-term. 89 points

Vegetal on the nose with rich beetroot aromas that are a touch musty. This shows a little sweetness with mint and sassafras accents. Round on entry then turning lean on the palate with some faint cherry fruit, a bit of old wood, and a hint of green anise seed. There’s still some tannin here, with some coffee overtones on the palate that shows fading richness but this is barely drinkable. 69pts

Spicy red and black fruits. Good, well-made, but not memorable.

Amazing. Full-bodied and restrained at the same time. A little hot in the aromas at first, then the alcohol (14.3%) blows off leaving plums and berries. Beautiful dark aubergine in color, and silky texture. Flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, and roast coffee.Peppery finish. Just fantastic, not as huge as many on the market. Easy to drink. Had with chicken chili and cornbread. Organic grapes.

Our Zinfandel is jammy and briary, with aroma sensations of brushing against wild blackberry bushes on a hot summer day. A bit of pepper, clove and cinnamon provides punctuation. Small crops and shallow hillside soils bring intensity of flavor while
