Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its length and total class. Mocha, game, smoke, graphite and plums are all supported by veins of cool, insistent minerality. This isn’t a blockbuster Cabernet, rather it is a wine that impresses for its finesse and precision. Sweet red cherries, mint, pencil shavings and violets are some of the notes that are layered into the super-refined finish. As always, Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon is distinguished for an extraordinary bouquet that recalls some of the great wines of the Medoc and the structure to age gracefully for years. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 blossoms in bottle...95+" WA 12/12 "Bright medium ruby. Wild aromas of blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate, plus a pungent whiff of eucalyptus. Dense, sappy and vibrant, with a distinct mountain quality to the very pure flavors of crushed, brambly dark berries, licorice and dark chocolate. Finishes with suave tannins and excellent length. Both 2010 and 2009 were very "suitable" seasons here, noted Philip Togni, as he was able to wait until Brix levels were high enough without losing too much acidity: "So the pHs are normal." The Tognis are now able to harvest their vineyard on Spring Mountain in four days flat...92-95" IWC 05/12

We planted our first vines up here at 2000 feet near the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley in 1981. Those phylloxera vulnerable rootstocks have now gone, replanted in the early nineties. Our first wines were Cabernet and Sauvignon blanc in 1983, but we have now concentrated our efforts on a very ageworthy Margaux-type blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc and Petit Verdot, all grown here on the 25 acre parcel where we live. “Estate Bottled” is an important definition for us, meaning that we grow all the grapes on land we own and make and bottle the wine here with our own workers, totally free from outside influences. There are three owners, Birgitta and Philip Togni, recently joined by their daughter Lisa. Birgitta specializes in the vineyard. Philip is a former student of Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux where he earned the Diplôme National d’Oenologie many years ago while working as assistant Régisseur at Château Lascombes. Lisa, holding an MBA, with a background in the wine Trade, has done harvests at Château Léoville-Barton and in Australia. Her plan is to take over the business during the next few years. Also Estate Bottled is our Tanbark Hill Cabernet from young vines which is sold primarily to the Trade. Most of the 2000 case annual production is sold to a mailing list on a first-come basis. Part of each offering is a very limited amount of the Cabernet made ten years earlier, as an illustration of the ageworthiness of our wine. The balance is split between a broad but thin presence in many of the well known wine stores in the U.S., and a definite presence in almost all European countries together with the principle Asian markets. One of our recent tasting achievements was in Brussels where the most noted professional panel in the country twice ranked our 1990 Cabernet above eleven other Bordeaux and California Cabernets of 1990 including Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion and Mouton. Ca’ Togni is a very sweet red wine inspired by Constantia, the great South African wine of the 19th century. It is made from our planting of the rare table grape Black Hamburgh, the only one to our knowledge in Napa County. Annual production rarely exceeds a single barrel of 500 half bottles. Read less

My 8th place wine/ Groups 8th place wine This smelled a touch under-ripe on the nose with a nice spiced note but lots of overwhelming pickle barrel and herb tone that dominated the light, raspberry fruit. In the mouth this was soft at firth then turned a bit feathery with the stern tannins peaking out on the finish that was drying and short. Not much worth revisiting here and this lost appeal with air. 84pts

Philip Togni makes some of Napa's most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. This is mountain fruit, so there is a fine dance between the generous fruit and the ripe tannins and supporting acidity. It's quite a waltz.

As always Togni has made a wine for the ages, that is to say a wine that will have serious aging potential however this vintage is significantly more accessible (with significant decanting time) than many of his previous offerings. As per usual we encounter massive tannins but very well integrated. Briary, cassis, huckleberry, and blackberry with clove, and charcoal notes. This is the only Napa Cab I would bet on to age beautifully for three decades.

WLTV North Jersey Off-Line at Basilicos: Nose of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, mint and a little mentholatum. Taste standouts were oak and cherry. This wine is still very young, but I like the potential I am tasting here. [90]
