Penfolds Koonunga Hill Semillon Chardonnay 2004
Koonunga Hill is a wine produced by Penfolds, one of Australia’s most famous wineries. The wine is named for the location of one of their Barossa Valley vineyards, first produced by winemaker Don Ditter in 1976 as a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Today, Chief Winemaker is Peter Gago, and the range consists of the flagship blend as well as single varietal Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Cabernet/Merlot blend and Chardonnay.
A butter bomb on a diet, the 2004 vintage from Penfold’s affordable Koonunga Hill line is a trimmer version of oaked chardonnay that cuts the fat, while still managing to dole out deliciously dangerous levels of aroma and flavour. Small barrique aging has led to a liberal dollop of oak spice, char, and buttered popcorn on the nose. Melon, apple crisp, and vanilla are added to the mix on the palate, which nonetheless manages to seem pleasantly tight and restrained. Low in flab, high in character.

Light, bright gold. Dusty tropical and orchard fruits on the nose, with hints of sweet butter and pine nut. Restrained, even elegant in style, the dried peach and apricot flavors nicely braced by gentle acids. Finishes with gently tangy, fresh notes ... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Chardonnay wine from in Australia. 2004 Penfolds Chardonnay Koonunga Hill 375ml
