Paul Hobbs Malbec 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Wine & Spirits: This selection of malbec comes from several mountain zones in Mendoza between altitudes of 2,300 and 3,800 feet. The blend is lively and delicious, with seductively ripe raspberry flavors that hold their freshness within the creamy texture. An elegant malbec. (Feb 2011)

Paul Hobbs Winery:
Paul Hobbs Winery sprouted from the passion of one man: Paul Hobbs. Paul Hobbs Winery sprouted from the passion of one man: Paul Hobbs. Paul wasn’t satisfied just becoming Head Enologist of Robert Mondavi’s Opus One in 1981, or becoming Vice-President/Winemaker of Simi Winery in 1989. No, he wanted to create his very own grapes, on his own land. This passion led to the creation of Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991. Focused in the Russian River Valley, each harvest is meticulously captured so as to extract the very best from each grape. This passion started with only three wines in the winery’s repertoire: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but the winery quickly grew to produce over a dozen wines. Today, Paul Hobbs still consults other wineries around the globe, including wineries in Chile, Argentina, and Hungary. Read less

I really like Paul hobbs wines and style of making wines but this effort is a little disjointed,a so so effort. It may well improve with a year of settling down since the grapes were on the vine two years ago. His consulting with Docero has produced better malbecs at this price point.

WE 91pts. - According to the Wine Spectator: Straightforward, showing a solid core of crushed plum, boysenberry and licorice notes, backed by sweet toast on the medium-weight finish. Drink now. 21,860 cases made.

The 2008 Bramare Malbec Lujan de Cuyo is purple/black with enticing scents of wood smoke, Asian spices, lavender, and assorted black fruits. It is sweeter, richer, and more structured than the Uco Valley cuvee. - According to the Wine Advocate

WA 93pts. - WS 90pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2008 Bramare Malbec Lujan de Cuyo is purple/black with enticing scents of wood smoke, Asian spices, lavender, and assorted black fruits. It is sweeter, richer, and more structured than the Uco Valley cuvee. Packed with fruit, it merits cellaring for 2-3 years and will deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2023. Vina Cobos is a partnership between Paul Hobbs, Andrea Marchiori, and Luis Barraud. As producers acquire more experience, attention is increasingly being paid to the effects of terroir. Mendoza is a relatively large region with a range of elevations and exposures. To this end, Cobos has produced 4 Bramare Malbecs, each from a different sub-region.
