Whenever I see this on a wine list (any vintage) I go for it. A highly versatile wine that never disappoints. So well structured that each layer seems to match whatever flavor profile is needed to go with food, or just to sip alone. Wish I owned more bottles!
The nose showed pure cranberry juice, dusty potpourri and herbs. On the palate, I found sour raspberry, minerals and Sour Patch candies. The finish showed a mouth-puckering red fruit. This bottle could use a little more time but, as always, is highly enjoyable to a lover of Italian wine.

Often some Sagrantino is incorporated into Montefalco Rosso wines to lend structure and dark-fruited opulence to Sangiovese and Montepulciano. This example from Paolo Bea is packed with plum and black cherry notes also hints of vanilla from having spent time in wood. The San Valentino sight is quite high-altitude, ensuring that the wine has good balance. The wine spends four years in a combination of tank and large oak barrel while "finding its identity," according to Neal Rosenthal, and is bottled unfiltered.
