Renowned for Rye, America’s first whiskey, since our founding in 1753, we take production of every barrel of Michter’s Rye very seriously. Our US*1 Rye is made from select American rye grain that is sheared to enable the saturation of more flavor during fermentation. It is then aged in a heated warehouse. This premium rye has hints of light spice, black pepper, marmalade and plum, spicy grain and light caramel.

Michter’s is a classic American whiskey produced in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. Its legacy dates back to the 1700’s, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk first built a small distillery in the Blue Mountain Valley and began converting leftover rye to whiskey. This whiskey became so popular that George Washington famously purchased bottles for his troops to warm their cockles during that brutal winter at Valley Forge. In 1860, Abraham Bomberger purchased the distillery from the Shenk family.  Sadly, the distillery was forced to close as a casualty of the Prohibition in 1919. After another changing of hands, the Bomberger distillery officially became Michter’s in the 1970s. However, financial problems forced them into bankruptcy until the 1990s, when the brand was resurrected by its president Joseph J. Magliocco and spirits magnate Richard “Dick” Newman. Their goal was to reintroduce the brand as a premium whiskey and return to the company’s roots as a quality rye producer. This was just in time for the consumer rye revolution that would coincide with the rise of classic American pre-Prohibition cocktails. Willie Pratt is their Master Distiller, dedicated to small production and using lower proofs for a smooth, rich whiskey. Says Pratt, “If a barrel is not at the exact right point of maturation and will benefit from more time, I won’t release it even if the sales guys and the distributors are screaming for more goods. That’s why they tease me and call me ‘Dr. No.’ ”   Michter’s proprietary lineup consists of single barrel ryes, small batch Bourbons, single barrel Bourbons and unblended American whiskey.
