Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve 2005
Winemaker's Notes:
Wine Enthusiast Review Rated 91 Most of Merryvale's best Cabs have reserve or vineyard designations, but this basic Napa Valley bottling is very fine. It shows the tasteful elegance and balance that define the estate. Dry and tannic, the 100% varietal wine has deep blackberry, currant and new oak flavors. It should develop well over a decade. Wine Tasting Notes Our Napa Cabernet is a perfect synthesis of balance and intensity. Aromas of ripe blackberry, creme de cassis, violets and star anise leap out of the glass. The wine unfolds on your palate with mouth filling dark fruits and minerality, and the finish goes on and on. Those with the patience to cellar this wine will be rewarded; we recommend decanting the wine in its youth.

Add your reviewVery pleasant. Holding back release has helped. Integrated and balanced - - French would say, "harmonious". Works with meat dishes and cheese. With such nice fruit, acid, tannin balance, should age for a couple years.
Actually, it was a 2007 half-bottle (I love half-bottles), and we had it with plain old spaghetti and meatballs. Nice little cab - decent fruit without being a fruit bomb, well balanced tannins, should have opened and allowed to air a bit sooner, as it improved from start to finish. Next time I'll know. Will buy again, as I love half-bottles, which are so hard to find, especially anything decent.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 92 EDITORS CHOICEMerryvale's '05 is very rich and balanced, and shows fine Napa Cabernet character in the intense focus of cassis, enriched with new French oak. It's not an ager, but showcases very high Napa quality for immediate drinking.Wine Tasting NotesOur Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon displays aromatic notes of cassis, lifted black current, vanilla and exotic spices. The mouthfeel is round and focused with a long finish.

Merryvale sources grapes from prime Napa Valley vineyards for their Stramont Cab, including Merryvale Estate Vineyard in St. Helena, Beckstoffer – ToKalon and Vineyard X in Oakville, and Georges III in Rutherford. This primo Napa fruit tells the story along with careful vinification using extensive native yeast fermentation and aging in French oak barrels, 30% new, for 18 months. Bottled unfiltered it shows deep extraction and texture. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 92 points and said: “Merryvale’s ’05 is very rich and balanced, and shows fine Napa Cabernet character in the intense focus of cassis, enriched with new French oak. 14% Merlot; 4% Syrah; 2% Petit Verdot; 1% Cabernet Franc. There is a subtle but uneasy conflict between ripeness and real fruit at work in this wine, and its themes of cherries and plums are overlain by an obvious veneer of milk-chocolate. Reasonably rich, slightly rounded in feel and fattened amidships by glycerin, it is roughed up by a rush of eleventh-hour tannin and will be helped by a few years of age.
