Margerum Red Rhone Blend Santa Barbara County M5 2004
M5 is a blend of five of the principal Rhone Valley grapes grown here in Santa Barbara County - Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Counoise. The Syrah comes from two of the top vineyards I work with - Great Oaks Ranch Vineyard and Alisos Vineyard. The total Syrah component is 44%. The Grenache comes from Crossroads Vineyard and Purisima Mountain Vineyard; this grape contributes mightily both in texture and in aromatics. Grenache is 18% of the blend. The Mourvèdre is from the hilltop section of Zaca Mesa (Tablas Clone) and from Vogelzang Vineyard that brings intensely dark and full flavors of black rose, tar, and pheromones to the blend. Mourvèdre is 22% of the blend. The remaining 16% of the blend comes from Tablas Clone Cinsault and Counoise that are grown right next to each other at Stolpman Vineyard. The Cinsault was just a massive brooding dark wine and the Counoise was blatantly fruity - it had watermelon galore. The wine is spicy with a nose that is a basket full of berry fruits; there are nuances of bark, cherry, and berry and a rich mouthful of complex fruits, a bunch of je ne sais quoi with a persistent intricate finish.
We are a small producer of Syrah, a Rhone style blend called M5, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and a few other varietals. Our grapes are purchased from the finest growers in Santa Barbara County. In addition, we are beginning to import a few exceptional wines we have found in our travels to the wine regions of Italy and France.
