Marcus James Malbec 2010

Member Review by freerangeathlete:

I keep coming back to this inexpensive wine. I've had a bad bottle, but I believe it may have just not survived shipping in this nasty, hot summer.

Delicious berry notes and hints of spice.

We did a brown bag Malbec taste test. We thought CERTAINLY the more expensive Malbec would win - we all seriously LOVED wine A and expected it to be the expensive one.... but in the end the favorite was the $2.99 bottle of 2010 Marcus James Malbec! OH MY WAS IT SMOOTH!

From a 'novice:' "Consumed with / after supper (my home-made chili con carné), Sat. May 21, 2011. Initial notes: nice purple color in glass (reflected light); clear, deep red in transmitted light; light (slight) aroma; initial taste - very dry, not sweet; dark berries. With supper: I'm ambivalent about this pairing: It was "O.K.," but this is perhaps the driest red that I've had, which is a distraction (same comment re: post-meal sipping). It's certainly palatable, but I much prefer the excellent Farnese Daunia Sangiovese, the Chilean Carmeneres, or our B.C. [British Columbia] reds; e.g. I previously had the Copper Moon Moonlight Harvest Shiraz with my chili, and it was a better pairing. Not bad for the price ($8.99 CDN, + $0.10 recycle deposit)."

Syrupy, with a very questionable after-taste... As I was sipping the wine before dinner, I thought that perhaps it wasn't a great sipping wine. I then paired it with that night's dinner (some lightly-breaded Pork filets served with penne, and broccoli in garlic in oil). The excellent meal unfortunately didn't improve matters. For $5.00 the Marcus James Malbec was certainly a gamble and I have had worse; but I can think of countless better choices for just a few dollars more.
