Louis M. Martini Winery:
We believe that Cabernet Sauvignon is the most noble of grapes. We believe that great winemaking begins with great vineyards, and we want the land to speak through our wines. Our wines express the best characteristics of Cabernet, the personality of the special places where our grapes are grown, and the vision and skill of the winemaker in blending balanced, engaging, and memorable wines.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

Immediate aromas of the earth, dark berry fruit, and spice, varying layers of fruit, a warming cinnamon spice, as palate progresses receive vanilla and milk chocolate components too, excellent complexity with smooth mouthfeel and wonderful length. I tasted all three of these Louis Martini wines at the winery in the original wine cellar surrounded by the original casks from the 1940's. It was stunning.

Best wine tasted at Louis M. Martini. Limited number of bottles were available when I visited. This everything you would expect from the top wine from cabernet specialist. Lots of smoke and dark fruit (black currant, black cherry) in the nose. Great, silky tannins, lots of flavor and long, lasting finish.

I think I preferred the Napa a bit more, but this is a nice cab at around $13. Reliable. Just not as rich and delicious as some others I have had from the area, but a stable performer. Good value.

Deep, deep, deep! Great nose of earth and spice, but kept spry with dried fruit and vanilla infused tobacco. Despite all of that, the berry twang finish it imparts cannot be ignored. Try it by the glass with a good Italian meal. That's how I found it!

This is a very complex wine. The wine needs to breathe for about 15-20 minutes befire consuming to allow the flavor to mellow and lessen the tartness. The nose is developed and slightly acidic. After letting the wine breathe, the iniial taste was sharp, but not overwelming. The follow-through is short lived, but complements italian red sauces well. After a minute or so, the aftertaste is non-existent.

Grew up drinking Louis and this wine definitely doesn't disappoint. Probably my favorite of the winery.

I get the dark berries, toasty oak and vanilla. It's deep and worth the extra bucks even for a mid-week casual dinner. Great to drink, very pleasant to inhale.

This lovely, gentle claret feels ripe and sunny with fresh cherry and blueberry flavors. The tannins have a black herb scent that adds to the wine's richness. For prime rib.

However, this estate does some stunning work in Napa as evidenced by one of the great values in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. Made from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and the rest Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, this stunning wine can undoubtedly be found discounted to under $25 a bottle. Moreover, there are nearly 66,000 cases produced, so it one of the few outstanding Napa Cabernets that also has tremendous availability. Its dense plum/garnet color is followed by a stunning perfume of black currants, loamy soil, blackberries and smoke. The wine cuts a full-bodied swath across the palate and possesses silky tannins, layers of fruit and a beautiful, opulent, round mouthfeel. It should drink nicely for 10-15 years. Readers may remember that I gave the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 90 points, and the 2007 is even better!

This wine is brimming with dark cherries and baking spice. Undertones of leather and Licorice are elegantly framed by sweet vanilla from the French oak barrel aging.

The cabernet Michael Martini produced from his family's extensive Napa Valley vineyards has been a great value for years. Rather than follow the trend toward superripe, generously oaked reds, the Martinis have used their prime vineyards to grow cherry- and blueberry-scented wine like this 2005, a gentle style of claret with the sunny richness of Napa Valley. The structure shows the same restraint, based more on fruit tannin than oak tannin. Rather than change their business model, the Martinis sold their winery on Highway 29 to the Gallo family in 2002, who gave Michael Martini the financial power to continue this style of wine. In 2005, he made a Reserve that's hard to beat with rare prime rib.

The more expensive 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is denser, more tannic, and more intense in fruit without the spice and earthiness of the Sonoma bottling. It should drink well for up to a decade.

The outstanding 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is also a terrific buy. A beautiful integration of sweet tannin and soft acids gives this wine a plush, succulent mouthfeel. It exhibits classic notes of cedar and black currants, medium to full body, admirable elegance as well as length, and slightly more oak than the inexpensive Sonoma bottling.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa possesses a dark ruby/purple color as well as a big, rich nose of black currant, loamy soil, and underbrush scents, medium body, and a firm structure. While accessible, it promises to evolve for 10-15 years.
